McILHENNY, 78 DIES AT AVERY ISLAND. Mrs. Mary Avery McIlhenny, eldest of the children of the late Judge Daniel Avery, died at the old family residence on Avery Island, Sunday, December 26th, 1915 in the afternoon. Mrs. McIlhenny was 78 years of age at the time of her death. She leaves six children, John A. McIlhenny, chairman of the Civil Service Commission of Washington, D. C., Ned McIlhenny, head of E. A. McIlhenny Sons, and Rufus McIlhenny of Avery Island; Paul McIlhenny of New Orleans, Mrs. Sidney Bradford and Miss Sarah McIlhenny of Avery's; one brother, General Dudley Avery, of Avery's and two sisters, Mrs. Paul B. Leeds, of Avery's and Mrs. William Preston Johnson of New Orleans. Though momentarily expected, the death of Mrs. McIlhenny was a distinct shock to the entire section. Belonging to a family of prominence since antebellum days, Mrs. McIlhenny was widely known and loved. The funeral took place on the island last Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock, following the arrival of a special train carrying relatives and friends, interment being in the old family burying ground on the island. The funeral services of the Episcopal church was conducted by Right Rev. Davis Sessums, bishop of Louisiana, assisted by Rev. R. R. Diggs, rector of Epiphany church of New Iberia. All of Mrs. McIlhenny's children were at her bedside previous to her demise, which came peacefully and quietly. A number of the friends of the family from New Iberia attended the obsequies going to the Island on a special train.
