After a year of illness, borne heroically, Rev. Father P. E. Mesnil, beloved pastor of St. Joseph's Church at Loreauville, La., was yesterday morning called to the maker, whom he had served so well and faithfully. Death came to the good man yesterday morning at 6 o'clock, at one of the water cure institutions in this city, and a few hours afterwards Father Thouvenin, S M, who had attended him during his last illness, accompanied the remains to the Southern Pacific train which bore them to the little Louisiana town where today they will be followed to the grave by his sorrowing parishoners. Born in France fifty-eight years ago, the deceased at an early age developed deep piety and a prenounced disposition toward religious life, which ultimately resulted in his taking up study preparatory to entering the priesthood. He was ordained thirty years ago and shortly after that came to Louisiana and began his life work in this diocese. He was in charge of the New River district for fifteen years, and built up a fine mission there. Six or seven years ago he was transferred to Loreauville and there continued his good work. He was taken ill a year ago, and failing to improve he returned last summer to his home in France in the hope of finding there the needed aid to health. The hope was vain, however, as he grew steadily weaker and finally determined to returned his work in Loreauville and patiently await the inevitable end. He did not reach his beloved parishoners, however, in life, for upon reaching New Orleans he became too weak to travel further, and found a resting place in one of the local water cure institutions where he hoped for relief and improvement. Yesterday morning death ended his sufferings. He passed peacefully into the great reward in store for all who devote their life to their Maker.
