As we close our forms, we learn of a sad accident which befel Mr. John Newman of this City, son of Mrs. J. E. Liettemeyer, which happened presumably between the hours of six and seven o'clock yesterday morning. Mr. Newman, from what we were informed had boarded the Southern Pacific train at the depot here on his way to the little town of Bowie, where he is employed as saw filer and was walking from one car into another when he was precipitated to the ground with his valise in his hand, fracturing his skull in such a terrible manner that there is little hope for his recovery. The unfortunate gentleman lay on the ground near Olivier Station from the time he fell until about eight o'clock when he was discovered by a colored man who happened to be passing. Upon learning that a party had been injured and needed attention, Mr. Joe J. Smith of Orange Grove plantation immediately went over to the scene of the accident to see what could be done for the victim, when to his surprise he recognized the party to be Mr. Newman of this City. He immediately got into communication with Mr. Geo. W. Dallas and in the meantime had a box car provide to transport him to this City for medical attention, being brought to the home of Mr. Dallas. The unfortunate affair has cast a gloom over the entire community where he has not only a number of relatives, but a legion of friends. Since writing the above we have heard conflicting stories of the accident, but under the circumstances it will probably never be known just how the unfortunate catastrophe occurred. Since writing the above Mr. Newman expired this Saturday morning at 5:30 o'clock A. M. His funeral will be held tomorrow from St. Peter's Catholic church between the hours of 11 A. M. and 3 P.
