Last Sunday evening at 8:15, surrounded by his loved ones, the venerable Mr. Felix Patout, died at his home on East Main Street. A life-long resident of Iberia, Mr. Patout enjoyed the respect and esteem of the entire Parish and more particularly of the people of New Iberia who were most benefitted by the financial and industrial enterprises with which he was connected. Born near the little village of Patoutville, the site of his father's ante- bellum plantation, he was educated by private tutors. and in attaining man's estate, engaged in farming. In the full vigor of his young manhood, he set to work at his chosen task, but as he labored and watched the development of his enterprise, war clouds gathered thickly, and ere he could enjoy any of the fruits of his labor, the threatening storm broke, and, as did the boys of to-day, he cheerfully sacrificed his personal interest to fight for his principles and for his Southland. Returning after four years of hardship and sufferings, undaunted, young Patout, associating himself with his brother, the late Hypolite Patout, undertook to recoup his losses and gain his fortune. Together, they labored and toiled, and under their joint management, developed the wasted and war torn lands of their home place, into the splendid Enterprise Plantation. At the death of his brother some thirty years ago the decedant disposed of his interest in the Enterprise Plantation and removed with his family to New Iberia, where, with the exception of a short period spent on his Hope Plantation, which he later sold to the State, he resided until the time of his death. Mr. Patout possessed a keene business mind, and though conservative and careful in his ventures, was quick to see opportunities and to grasp them. To his foresight is due the large amount of stock he held in the New Iberia National Bank, of which he served as vice president from its organization until two years ago when, pleasing the infirmaties of age, he asked to be relieved. This same foresight, let him to associate himself with Judge Breaux and the late P. L. Renoudet in the establishment and operation of the P.L. Renoudet Lumber Co., in the organization of the Citizens Bank and in the merger of that Bank with the People's Bank, in the construction of the splendid Hotel Frederic and in many other enterprises too numerous to mention. Of a retiring disposition and shunning publicity Mr. Patout was none-the-less not derelect in his civic duties, and as a member of the Police Jury, for several terms, devoted much of his time and his talents to the advancement of the interest of the Parish. Devoted to home life, aside from business activities, Mr. Patout found little to interest him outside the family circle. There, surrounded by his loved ones, he found happiness which his well spent and successful life merited him. He is survived by four sons, Messrs. Sidney, Henry, Gaston and Frederick and one daughter, Mrs. Edwin S. Broussard, all of New Iberia. Another daughter, Mrs. E. Ricaud only two weeks ago, preceeded her father to the grave. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Society and the Confederate Veterans, of whom a large number followed the remains to their last resting place. 2nd. Obituary: source: The Weekly Iberian. (New Iberia, La.) 1894-1946, December 14, 1918, Image 3 FELIX PATOUT - Died, at his home in our city on Sunday, Mr. Felix Patout, age 84 years. Mr. Patout was a man who united sound sense with strong convictions, and who was imminently fitted to aid in raising a high standard of citizenship. Of keen business intuition and saga city he made for himself a competency, allowing him many years ago to retire from all active business. He was of fine moral character, and possessed many excellent characteristics. A member of the United Confederate veterans. And so another name has been stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old citizens. The funeral took place on Tuesday evening from St Peter's Catholic church. He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter, Mrs. Edwin S. Broussard, and four sons, Messrs Henry, Sidney, Gaston and Frederick Patout. The Iberian extends its sympathy.
