RIVIERE. - It is with deep sorrow and regret that we chronicle the unfortunate and sad ending of our fellow-citizen, Mr. George H. Riviere, which occurred last Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Deceased had been a sufferer from an incurable disease for several years, in fact he had become so despondent recently over his ailment, couple with financial troubles that on several occasions he expressed an intention to take his own life. On Monday morning after going to his jewelry store and spending a while with his son, George, Jr. he stated that he would return home. Upon reaching the middle of the public bridge spanning the Teche he carried out his threat, and discarding his hat and coat jumped into the water. At the time there was no one near enough to him to interfere and a little boy who witnessed the scene ran to his store and informed his son what had happened. The young man ran to the bridge as fast as he could and jumped into the Bayou, catching a hold of him, held his head out of the water until others attracted to the scene, assisted in pulling his limped body out of the water. Unfortunately being in such a weakened condition he could not be resuscitated. He was then carried to the Dauterive Sanitarium which is also near the Bridge, but nothing could be done and his heart ceased to function. The remains were then brought to his home on Duperier Avenue and prepared for burial. On Tuesday morning his remains were shipped to New Orleans and Wednesday he was peacefully laid to rest in the family vault in St. Louis cemetery. Mr. Riviere was a splendid citizen and his death cast a gloom over the community. He was ardent and enthusiastic member of the Elk Lodge and at the time of his demise was filling the office of Treasurer. He was also a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge. He leaves to mourn him, three daughters and two sons, and a grief-stricken widow. The Enterprise extends its heartfelt sorrow to the family.
