The Daily Iberian: Respected local businessman and owner of Schwing Insurance Agency Inc., Jules A. “Tony” Schwing, 72, died Sunday night leaving behind a legacy in the community. Schwing’s father, Jules Schwing, purchased the Schwing Insurance building in 1964 located on the 300 block of East Main Street, which was the city’s first post office and at the time the only federal building between Houston and Baton Rouge. Tony Schwing took over ownership over two decades ago and was credited with restoration of the building. “That was one of his proudest accomplishments,” Schwing’s wife Barbara Swching said. “It was built in 1899 and it is on the national register of historic places. It’s a landmark in New Iberia now.” Schwing graduated from Catholic High School in 1959 and earned a degree in history from Spring Hill College in 1963. Around the community, Schwing was known to be active in several organizations. Schwing was past president of the Rotary Club in New Iberia. He was honored recently by the club for his 40-plus years of service. “Tony and I were in the Rotary Club for over 40 years together,” Dan LeBlanc of David Funeral Home said. “He was a good business man. Tony was very involved in his business and always wanted to do the right thing. He loved dealing with people.” LeBlanc said his relationship with Schwing became somewhat of a brotherhood over the years. “We had a fellowship through Rotary and its almost like family. We’ve had some good times together. I see his sons carrying on his legacy. I used to see him and his sons quite often,” LeBlanc said. Schwing’s sons Armond and Jules Blanchet Schwing will continue to run Schwing Insurance in the future. Along with his involvement in the Rotary Club, Schwing was on the Iberia Medical Center Board for 12 years and was a sponsor for the Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana. Schwing also became King of the Krewe of Iberia in 1998. “He did a lot of great things in the community,” Barbara Schwing said. “He was a very generous man.” Schwing leaves behind five children, Tiffany Schwing Breaux, Samuel Brett Cooper, Jules Blanchet Schwing, Juliet Schwing Davis and Armond Schwing, along with 10 grandchildren. The baby of the grandchildren will bear the his grandfather’s name, Jules Anthony Schwing Davis.
