WARREN SHELBY. - Owing to a deplorable accident, one of the prominent merchants of Jeanerette died by poisoning last Monday, and his wife, a bride of a year, is prostrated because of the innocent part she played in the sad tragedy. It was but a year ago that Mr. J. Warren Shelby, of Jeanerette, and Miss Ruby Row Jameyson were married by the Rev. C. C. Kramer, and their married life is said by those who know them well to have been particularly happy. Recently Mr. Shelby has been somewhat under the weather and early this morning he decided to take a glass of a mineral water that has not a very pleasant taste. According to the accounts received here he asked his wife to give him the water and she compiled with his wishes going to the mantel piece, emptying out a full glass of what she supposed was the water. Instead it proved to be a solution of carbolic acid, but this fact was not noticed by either of them. Mr. Shelby simply held his breath and gulped it down. It was too late then for an antidote even if the wife had known what to give him or had it handy. In twenty minutes Mr. Shelby was dead and the young wife in hysterics. Medical aid was summoned but the action of carbolic acid is swift, and nothing could be done. Just how the carbolic acid happened to be on the mantel piece is not known yet. It was in a bottle that had formerly held the same mineral water Mr. Shelby wanted to take and had been placed there by himself for some purpose. The news of the accident quickly spread and relatives here were notified by six o'clock this morning of the sad occurrence. This afternoon a large delegation of the members of the local lodge of Elks to which Mr. Shelby belonged, went to Jeanerette to attend the funeral which was to take place at four o'clock from the residence. Mr. Shelby was well known here and was one of the leading young business men of Jeanerette. His untimely end is deeply regretted by all who knew him for there were apparently many years of usefulness before him.
