An unfortunate death was the sad fate of young Saline Soloman, a native of New Iberia who was murdered by some negro robbers at Lafayette on Sunday morning, Jan. 7th, several hours before daylight. Soloman was shot in the back with a 44 Colts revolver while in the act of trying to run down the thieves who had committed several robberies in that town that night and had attempted to enter the place where he was sleeping. The remains of the young man were brought here for interment the next day. After the crime was committed several negroes were arrested and on one of them a weapon was found. The negroes claimed they had not fired the shot, but sufficient evidenced was produced to cause the officials to hold them for the murder. On yesterday morning upon order of Judge Campbell of the District Court of that Parish and permission from our local health officials the remains were exhumed and an autopsy held by the Coroner of that Parish with a view of finding the bullet that caused the death. The investigation resulted in the bullet of the nickel coated variety of 38 calibre, while the revolver carried by the accused murderers was of a different make and now there is a doubt expressed as to the guilt of the two negroes that were arrested for the crime.
