One of New Iberia's oldest and most valued citizens, Mr. William Southwell passed away yesterday evening at six o'clock after a comparatively brief illness. The end was not unexpected, but it was hoped that the man that all knew and respected would conquer the illness that had siezed him, but it was not to be and surrounded by his children he began that journey that knows no ending. Born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1832, Mr. Southwell came here about 40 years ago and his active brain did much to make this city what it is. An architect, builder and contractor, his work in those days stands today as a monument to his memory. The Catholic Church, the Convent and many of the chief structures of the former days of the city were built by him and will remain with us for years to come to remind us for years to come to remind us of the man who gave much time and thought to the improvement of his adopted home. He was one of the first to recognize the importance of lower Main Street as a residence neighborhood and for twenty three years he occupied the home in which he passed away. He was a prominent mover in all the enterprises that had for their object the betterment of the city and at one time was a member of the City Council. About fifteen years ago he retired from active business life and since then has been living quietly surrounded by his sons and daughters and his many friends. Lately his health began to fail rapidly but such was his remarkable vitality that it was hoped his span of life would be lengthened, but it was not to be. He leaves two daughters and three sons, Douglas, Ralph and J. W. and Mrs. J. J. Forgey and Mrs. M. W. Fisher and several grand children. The funeral will be held from the Episcopal Church at three o'clock this afternoon.
