Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com October 26, 2016, 12:29 am The Daily Iberian. October 2016 Thomas “Big Tom” Plewman Sparks III, 77, of Waxahachie, Texas, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 2, 2016. Tom was born March 28, 1939, in Newellton to Thomas and Gladys (Clement) Sparks. He graduated from New Iberia High School in 1956, and got a Bachelor of Science at Tulane where he was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He enlisted as an officer in the Navy in 1961. On November 26, 1966, he married Jan “Jenny” Williams in Corpus Christi, Texas. Thomas served in the Navy for 20 years and was stationed in Hawaii, Corpus Christi, Guam, Coronado, Glenview and New Orleans before retiring from the service as a Lieutenant Commander in 1984, after which the family relocated to the Dallas area. During his military career he became very interested in computers and programmed, sold and tinkered with them for decades after. He enjoyed photography, target shooting, reloading, doting on his family and spoiling his dogs absolutely rotten. Thomas is survived by his daughter, Karen (Sparks) McMullan, his son, Thomas Plewman Sparks IV, and his wife Jan of Maypearl, Texas. An interment service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, October 14, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. The family will be holding a private remembrance afterward. He was almost impossible to buy gifts for in life, but in truth loved simple things like holding hands or a box of his favorite felt-tipped pens. A fresh cup of coffee, especially if you brought it to him. In light of this, and in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Tom’s memory to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
