May 23, 1903, page 1 DEATH. - Claims One of Iberia's Respected Citizens. - John Steffenauer Passes Into the Great Beyond. - Another good old soldier has crossed the Great Divide and entered the Beyond from whence there is no returning, no more battles to be fought, and where joy and happiness reigns supreme. John Steffenauer, Sr., one of New Iberia's pioneer and highly respected citizens, a veteran of the Civil war, a gentleman whom to know was to like, died at his residence on Providence street, New Iberia, at 12:30 o'clock, a.m., on Thursday, May 14, 1903, after a severe and prolonged illness. Deceased was seventy-one years, eleven months and eighteen days old, was a resident of Iberia for over thirty years, and leaves a wife, two sons and numerous sorrowing friends and relatives to mourn his loss. Funeral services were held in the Episcopal Church at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Rev C C Kramer presiding, and the remains were interred in the Protestant Cemetery, a large concourse of sorrowing friends attending the last sad rites in memory of the deceased. The New Iberia Enterprise says: "We are called on to announce the death of a most estimable citizen, Mr John Steffenauer, Sr., which occured [sic] last Thursday morning at 12:30 o'clock. Mr. Steffenauer was born in 1831 and was consequently seventy-two years old, the Scriptural limltation [sic] of life. Thirty years of this time was spent in this parish, during which time he gained the esteem and confidence of all who knew him. Of that sturdy, honest German race, his influence for good was always felt by those with whom he came in contact."
