(New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, October 29, 1910, Image 3 OBITUARY. On Sunday afternoon, last, October 23d, death claimed for its own, Mrs. Mary A. Stokes, mother of our fellow-townsman, Mr. Jeff J. Forgey. Mrs. Stokes has been a resident here for the past four years, since the demise of Mr. F. E. Stokes in Opelousas, but prior to that time lived in this City with her son. Mrs. Stokes was 72 years of age and a staunch member of the Methodist church, taking an active part in all of its charitable and missionary work. Her life as a Christian worker was felt in other communities besides New Iberia, where she was loved and admired by a host of friends, and her sudden death on Sunday afternoon came as a great schock (sic) to the community, especially her many friends who had greeted her in church only few hours before her death. Deceased was first married to Capt. Forgey, one of the pioneer steamboatmen of the Teche country prior to and after the war. One child was born to them, being J. J. Forgey. Besides her son, she leaves one sister and one brother and two grand- children to mourn her loss. The funeral was held in Franklin, her native home, on Monday last in the presence of a large assembly of grief-stricken relatives and friends.
