SHAFFER. - General Thomas J. Shaffer, commander- in-chief of the Louisiana Division, United Confederate Veterans, died at 9:30 o'clock last Saturday night in the St. Mary Sanitarium at Franklin, St. Mary Parish, after an illness of some duration. General Shaffer was born in Terrebonne Parish seventy-one years ago. Early in 1861 he enlisted in a company which became a part of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Dreux's First Louisiana Battalion of Infantry. While serving in the Army of Northern Virginia he was elected a lieutenant of a company organized in Terrebonne Parish, of which his brother, John D. Shaffer, was captain, which became a part of the Twenty-sixth Louisiana Regiment, participating in all the engagements of this regiments until its surrender at Vicksburg. When his regiment was exchanged Lieutenant Shaffer was assigned to service in the Western District of Louisiana, gallantly discharging his duty until the close of the war. In 1868 General Shaffer purchased a sugar plantation in St. Mary Parish, on which he resided until about a year ago, when he removed to Terrebonne. He was active in the great fight in 1876 which resulted in the election of gallant Francis T. Nicholls as Governor and the redemption of Louisiana from carpet bag and scallawag misrule. General Shaffer was loyal to the Democratic party, adhering steadfastly to his political faith until his death. More than five years ago General Shaffer was elected Major General of the Louisiana Division, United Confederate Veterans, and has been re-elected to that position at every subsequent reunion, and in his death the Confederate veterans of Louisiana suffer a grevious (sic) loss. Great in heart, wholesome and hopeful in disposition, loyal and true in his personal friendships and in the larger claims of his State; brave soldier, good citizen, honest man, Thomas J. Shaffer so lived as to deserve and receive the respect of all people. He was in active and useful employment up to the last, and in dying receives a tribute as sincere as it is universal. source: The Weekly Iberian. Resolved, that we learn with deepest sorrow and regret of the demise of our beloved comrade and Commander, Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Shaffer, "Who crossed over the river to rest in the shade at Franklin, La., April 24th, 1915." Our gallant Commander was born in Terrebonne Parish, La., in 1843. He slept in the leaves and stood shoulder to shoulder with us when we were all in the splendid vigor of youth, and always had a cheerful smile and kindly word for his comrades and friends and as the years rolled on, and old age overtook us, he was still the courteous, genial, sympathetic friend to all Confederate soldiers however humble or exalted. Gen. Shaffer was elected Commander of the Louisiana Division each year from 1910 to 1914, serving his six terms when death claimed him. His continuation in this exalted position for so long a time is evidenced of his ability as Chief and shows the love his old comrades each and all had for him as a man and friend. "He sleeps With the braves who sink to rest By all their country's wishes blest, When Springtime with its sheeny gold Lays flowers on the hollowed mold." To his grief stricken family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolence. Resolved, that these resolutions be spread on the minutes of Camp No. 1788 and the bereaved family of our beloved Chieftain be forwarded with a copy of same. L. G. Williams, L. A. Pellerin, L. O.
