TEMPLE SMITH DIED FROM WOUND. - Lake Charles, a. m., Oct. 4. - Dr. Temple B. Smith for many years a leading physician of Lake Charles and president of the local Board of Health, died at St. Patrick's sanitarium last evening shortly before 5 o'clock as a result of a wound inflicted by his wife September 26. Dr. Smith was shot by Mrs. Smith after a family row had been indulged in. Owing to the prominence of both parties the case has created a great sensation in Lake Charles. Mrs. Smith being a club woman standing high in social circles. For the past three days Dr. Smith has hovered between life and death and it was not thought that he could survive as long as he did. While every effort was made to save him, the nature of the wound was such that his physicians held out but small hope from the outset. The wound which caused his death was a pistol shot, the ball entering the intestines. Gangrene followed the operation by his physicians and death followed last evening. Coroner Fisher impaneled a jury as soon as he heard of Dr. Smith's death and proceeded to the Smith residence at Common and Washington streets, where Mrs. Smith had been under surveillance since the shooting occurred, to hold an inquest. Newspapermen were excluded from the hearing at Mrs. Smith's request. Dr. Smith's dying statement will be introduced this afternoon and it is not likely that any verdict will be rendered until it is read. District Attorney Joseph Moore has been asked for the dying statement of Dr. Smith but stated that he did not think it would be advisable to give out anything until after the matter had been laid before the coroner's jury.
