Creamer marykcreamer@yahoo.com October 26, 2016, 12:23 am The Daily Iberian. October 2016 Judy Eva Romero was born September 3, 1937, at Avery Island to Nola Landry and Sylvester Romero. She grew up surrounded by a very large, loving, Cajun family and attended schools on Avery Island and in New Iberia. After attending business school at University of Southwest Louisiana in Lafayette she went to work back on Avery Island in the offices of the McIlhenny Company, makers of Tabasco sauce. In 1961, she met Naval Aviation Cadet Bill Todd, one of “the boys from the base.” Her strong family ties, strong Catholic faith and her spirit of “Laissez les bons temps rouler” won his heart and, in 1965, they married in New Iberia. Judy and Bill settled in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served in the U.S. Navy. She quickly settled into the life of a “Navy wife,” volunteering and making many lifelong friends. In 1968, she and Bill left the Navy for Eastern Air Lines and settled in Flemington, New Jersey. For the next 30 years they raised three children, William S., James K., and Caroline. During those years in New Jersey, Judy was a faithful member of St. Magdalens Catholic Church. She volunteered in many church ministries, served in the PTO, and made many more long-lasting friendships. When Bill left Eastern for work in Saudi Arabia, Judy stayed in New Jersey and went to work in the accounting department at Johanna Foods. She and Bill retired in 1999 and moved to Gastonia, N. Carolina. In Gastonia, Judy again set to work creating a home for herself and Bill. She volunteered at St. Michael Catholic Church where she was a faithful member, joined a book club, a prayer group, a water aerobics group at the YMCA and enjoyed being a grandmother to her eight grandchildren, six of whom reside close by in Gastonia. She and Bill enjoyed traveling to visit with family and old friends, as well as visiting new places throughout the U.S., France, Germany, and Mexico. Judy’s Cajun family values and “joie de vivre” helped create a strong, loving family. She was a woman of great faith, a caring heart, a beautiful grace, and a joyful spirit. Her family was her greatest joy. Judy is survived by her husband of 51 years, William “Bill” D. Todd Jr.; brother and sister-in-law Sylvester “Vest” Romero Jr. and Juanita; children William S. Todd and wife Susan, James K. Todd and wife Heather, and Caroline Todd Haney; grandchildren William L. Todd, Matthew L. Todd, Michael D. Todd, Elias T. Haney, Daniel N. Todd, Samuel P. Haney, Abigail G. Todd, and Zachary M. Bishop. She is also survived by her aunt, Rita Nunez of Erath, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 25, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Founders Chapel of the funeral home with Deacon John P. Weisenhorn officiating. Interment will be private. Judy requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to St. Michael Catholic Church, 708 St. Michaels Lane, Gastonia, NC 28052 or www.stmichaelsgastonia.org. The family wishes to commend the staff of CaroMont Regional Hospital and Robin Johnson House for their comfort, kindness and care.
