(New Iberia, La.) 1885-1902, December 14, 1901, Image 3 Gabriel Valezano, a respected and well-to-do citizen of Jeanerette, was killed at that place at an early hour on Wednesday morning. From what could be learned Valezano was seen last Tuesday night in company with a stranger, who told him that he was wanted by a family of Italians living in the western portion of the town. This was the last seen of him until Wednesday morning, when he was found murdered in a small alley-way leading to Main street. His face and head had been terribly beat up with some blunt instrument. One of his arms was broken, and from the bruises on his hands and his cut fingers, it goes to show that he must have made a desperate effort to protect himself. Valezano came here and settled several years ago. He worked for a number of years as a blacksmith for the old lumber firm of Milmo, Stoke & Co., and accumulating a little money started in the grocery business. He made a success of this and accumulated quite a lot of money. He retired from business about a year ago, and had the esteem of every one who knew him, as he was always looked upon as an honest and upright citizen. He owned quite a lot of valuable property in the town. The authorities, both municipal and parochial, are investigating the cowardly crime, and already two Italians, Joe Cantello and wife, have been arrested and jailed. Circumstantial evidence is very strong against them. Spots of blood were traced to their place of business, and their room had been washed this morning, not sufficiently, however, to wipe out all traces of blood which were yet visible. The clothes worn by Cantello on Tuesday were found hanging on a line; they had just been washed, but yet disclosed several bloody spots.
