Died in New Iberia on Thursday evening, April 11th at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. F. G. Blumenthal, Mrs. Widow P. Alciblade Veazey, nee Marie Frere and native of Franklin, La., born in the year 1848. Mrs. Veazey was the widow of ex Sheriff P. A. Veazey, who departed this life many years since. Deceased had been in failing health for the past two years and breathed her last at 5:40 o'clock P. M., surrounded by her devoted children and grand-children. She leaves to mourn her loss three daughters and three sons, all having reached their majority, among them being Mrs. F. G. Blumenthal of this City, Mrs. Chas. Wiggin of New Orleans, Mrs. W. K. Browning of Dallas, Texas and Messrs. Leon A. Veazey of Jeanerette and Fernand and Walter, now residents of Houston, Texas. The funeral obsequies were held yesterday afternoon at St. Peters Catholic church and attended by sympathetic friends and relatives. source: New Iberia Enterprise and Independent Observer. (New Iberia, La.) 1902-1944, April 20, 1912, Image 3 A TRIBUTE. One of the last Grandes Dames, belonging to the last, fast disappearing generation, has gone to her everlasting, eternal slumber. During the zenith of her career, her house was ever the rendezvous of some of the most famous historical local figures who so courageously and determinedly settled the race questions that stirred the last remnant of the dying century. A proverbial vivacity and the cheering, refreshing warmth of an inviting sunshine of home-life greeted guest and visitor and non ever left, but were impressed with the typical happiness and contentment of the fireside. Mrs. Alcibiade Veazey had been born with charity as her mission. Without glamor and ostentation, the germs of relief, with her ever ready hand of friendship were planted on fallow fields of dire poverty and distress, regardless of creed and race. Many of those may hear testimony to this, her brightest jewel of her womanhood's character. A product of strenuous times, where dangers and hardships, courage and sacrifice formed the greater part of her young school days curiculum, her type of womanhood and its characteristics belong to Louisiana's ideal of self sacrifice forming the chapter of tumultuous regeneration. A string of evergreen placed in our memory, perpetuating this spirit of love of people, of neighbor, of country will replace the sculptured epitaph recording a well spent life. - JULES DREYFUS.
