Very early on Sunday morning Mrs. Voorhies was attacked with congestion of the lungs, and the combined efforts and skill of both Doctors Sabatier and Woolf were required to save her life. She seemed to have been doing very well, when on Tuesday morning she died. Mrs. Voorhies maiden name was Louise Charbonnet; she left a large family of children. The many friends of the family feel a deep sympathy for them. source: The Weekly Iberian. Such was the intelligence that shocked the entire community, friends and relations far and near. "Her children shall arise and call her blessed, and her husband also, for he praiseth her." On Sunday morning, while it was yet dark, the white-winged angel of death paused for awhile within the love-lit home of Mr. Alexis Voorhies, fanning with his breath the cheek of the idolized darling of the circle, the beautiful wife and mother, just in the prime of life. But looking upon this bit of heaven (for "love is heaven, and heaven is love") seeing the self-forgetting, loving mother and this untiringly devoted husband, and the little band of precious children, he seemed reluctant to do his office, and so withdrew for a time. The rose returned to the pallid cheek, and grieving to see her loved ones anxious, she assured all that she felt quite well, and so remained, lovingly watched and tended. But those to whom she was so dear were not entirely comforted. There was a light in the beautiful eyes that seemed to shine from a glowing spirit ready to unclasp and drop its garment of mortality. But that sweet reprieve was very precious when this blessed wife and mother and loving sister and daughter, talked and laughed happily with all her near and dear ones, and even a few privileged friends chatted with her and rejoiced profoundly and sincerely that the priceless life was spared for a time. But again on Tuesday morning in that darkest hour, the call came, and this beautiful spirit went home to meet the members of the broken family circle, who are awaiting their mother. Surely, those who pass through death's shadow must realize, as we cannot, how near they are to those they seem to leave in sorrow, and how valuable their ministry of love can be, else such loving and beloved ones would not be happy in the realms of bliss. "We see but dimly through these mists and vapors Amid this earthly damp; What seems to us but sad funeral tapers, May be Heaven's distant lamp. "There is no death! what seems so is transition; This life of mortal breath Is but the suburb of the life elysian Whose portal we call Death. "Day after day we think what she is doing In those bright realms of air; Year after year her tender steps pursuing, Behold her grown more fair." Thus do we walk with her and, keep unbroken The bond which nature gives, Feeling "that our remembrance though unspoken May reach her where she lives." One who knew and loved her. - M. L. P.
