WALET. - Last Monday afternoon, Oct. 21st, this community was thrown in grief by the announcement of the death of Louis A. Walet, which occurred at his Iberia Street residence at 3:50 P. M. A scion of one of the pioneer families of Iberia Parish, Louis Alfred Walet was born at his father's plantation home near Loreauville, on September 8th, 1886. There he spent his childhood and attended the public school presided over by his father, until qualified to enter Spring Hill College, from which noted institution, he was graduated, and returned to his native Parish to devote himself to the cause of education. Receiving a subordinate appointment on the teaching staff of the public schools, by zealous endeavor and close application to his work, he gained rapid promotion; and when but 22 years of age, was elected principal of the New Iberia Central High School. In this position he served for four years, at the end of which, a vacancy having occurred in the office of Parish Superintendent, he was farther promoted by the School Board to fill the vacancy, and continued, for six consecutive years to perform the exacting duties of that important office. A series of misfortunes which have befallen his family of late, make the sorrow attending the death of Professor Walet the more keene. But a few months ago, an older brother, Hon. John D. Walet died rather unexpectedly while undergoing an operation in New Orleans, while a few days ago, news was received of the death on a transport bound for Europe, of Chas. Walet, a son of John D. Walet. and finally on the very day of Prof. Walet's death, a cablegram conveyed the intelligence that a younger brother Dr. Perry Walet, was wounded on the battle field of France. About three years ago, Mr. Walet was married to Miss Mathilde Renoudet, who with an infant son survives him. Besides these, he leaves to mourn his loss, his venerable father, Mr. John H. Walet, and the following sisters and brothers: Mesdames Gus. Bonin and F. O. Darby and Messrs. Plenny C. and Junius Walet, all of Loreauville and Dr. Perry Walet with the American Army in France. Due to the prevailing epidemic, a strickly (sic) private funeral was held Tuesday, October 22d at 3 P. M., with services at St. Peter's Catholic church in New Iberia and interment in the family plot at Loreauville. Source: The Weekly Iberian. He was a victim of the influenza. It seemed but yesterday that he was in perfect health and cordially greeted all whom he met. As one friend expressed it: "Can it be possible, that we shall never meet him again in this world?". Prof. Walet was comparatively a young man when he was called by his people to assume the responsible duties of the Parish Superintendent of Publication Education. It was also at a time when the "School Muddle in Iberia Parish" was discussed to the very state line in every direction. It was at a time when the people themselves were divided into factions in consequence of the perplexing questions then unanswered. School Board opinions were appealed to higher authorities for final settlement. Such vexations were enough to unbalance the poise of older men and destroy their efficency, but he never seemed to lose sight of the fact that the result of such a contest bore its greatest consequences upon the school system of the parish. Once it was settled no word or act of his ever fanned the dying embers into a new glow. His administration of school affairs in this parish was eminently successful. When he took them in hand the School Board was harrassed by debt, over crowded schools, and shortened terms. He and his co-laborers soon resolved system out of chaos, maintained the best efficiency of the schools, with a singleness of purpose of carrying the advantages of the groundwork of education to the greatest possible number. With him life was too earnest to cherish grudges or to nurse disappointments. He sought and obtained results. Under his directing hand old obligations were liquidated, the compensation o teachers was equitably cared for, school properties were maintained and extended to meet the growing necessities of the communities. When the last school term closed he had a very creditable balance in bank.
