He was a native of Iberville parish, graduated at West Point, and stood at the head of his class composed of such men as Hancock, Sherman, and Thomas. He served in the Mexican War with distinction, entered the Confederate army as Colonel of the Third Louisiana Regiment and was promoted to Brigadier General before the close of the war.
