Found on newspaper microfilm in East Baton Rouge Library DIED At the residence of his son-in-law, James A. Ventress, Esq., in the Parish of Ascension, on the 28th of September, at 8:00PM of a long painful illness, the Hon. James N. Brown, of Manchac, Iberville Parish, age 54 years. Mr. Brown was a native of the Parish of West Feliciana, in this state, whence he removed in 1840 to his last residence at Manchac, where he embarked in the cultivation of a sugar plantation. Few persons in this state were ever more successful in this occupation. This result was due to his energy, systomatic management, sound judgement and sterling integrity. He was emphatically the architect of his own fortunes. He was indeed esteemed a modal planter. Among his neighbors and friends no man was more respected for his excellent qualities of heart, as well as for his admirable good sense, for his public spirit and sound views than James N. Brown. Those who knew him best esteemed him most. His public service was limited to a single session of the Legislature of Louisiana, and as representative of his Parish, discharged his duties in a faithful and impartial manner. The influence of Mr. Brown on the sentiments of the people among whome he lived was very great, and his public usefulness second to that of no other citizen. Mr. Brown leaves a family of six children to mourn the loss of a devoted father and their grief will be shared by a large circle of friends.

Additional Comments: James Norfleet was born on August 22, 1806 in Adams County Mississippi. He married Ester DuBose McCrea. He is buried in Magnolia Cemetery in the family plot.
