He married 5-6-1842 Caldwell Par., La. to St.Helena Barret born cir. 1825 Ms.- died cir. 1899 Nacogdoches Co., Tx. They are both buried in the Owens-Nelson Cemetery in Cushing, Tx. They were the parents of seven (7) known children: Margaret Nelson born 1844 La., Richard Taliaferro Wade "Doc" Nelson born June 17, 1846 Jackson Par., La., Mary Ann Nelson born December, 1847 Jackson Par., La., Nancy Jane Nelson born June, 1849 Jackson Par., La., Martha A. "Dutch" Nelson born September, 1854 Jackson Par., La., John Tolbert Nelson born February 14, 1857 Jackson Par., La., and Francis Delila Catherine "Pink" Nelson born July, 1861 in Texas. According to the 1867 Hill Co., Tx. Voters Registration, Richard Nelson left Jackson Par., La. cir. 1854 and moved his family to Texas. He states that he had lived in Texas 13 years. He also stated that he has lived in Hill Co., Tx. for 8 months. Richard Nelson moved his family along with his oldest son Richard T.W. Nelson and his wife and family to Nacogdoches Co., Tx. Only three (3) of their seven (7) children married: 1. Richard T.W. Nelson married twice: 1. Mary E.E. Garrison 2. Mary F. Byrd 2. John Tolbert Nelson married once: Missouri Owens 3. Francis Delila Catherine Nelson married once: Judge "M" T.D. Owens Additional Comments: Their 1st child: Margaret died in her teens and never married. Richard and St.Helena Barret Nelson had three (3) daughters that were blind: Mary Ann (blind in one eye), Martha and Nancy were totally blind. According to a Newspaper article from the Daily Sentinel in Nacogdoches, Tx. they went blind from a chemical called Paris Green that was on cotton that they got in their eyes while picking cotton.
