Sally Embry Viada ==================== 8/14/98 11:57:48 AM Central Daylight Time Were any of the records of Jackson Parish sent to the State before the fire? It was late enough in the century to do so if requested. Also, I noticed that in the queries list, many people seem Scots-Irish or English. Why did people come to LA during this period, seeking land?, assylum?, new conquest?, religious freedom? Were some quakers? There seems to be no history other than dates it was formed. Did these people come from certain areas of the east? Was Jackson already settled before it was made into a new county in 1856? Were there land lotteries or agents to persuade people to come and settle? If you can help me to answer these questions I would love to hear from you. My ggg-grandfather moved to Jackson in 1860. He was a well-to-do farmer in Pulaski Co., GA and seemed successful. What was the lure to get him here at age 52? I would just like a more detailed history of Jackson. I believe he is buried in Jackson Parrish, but I cannot find any record of him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. J. D. Harvey ==================== 98-07-15 12:11:57 EDT SANDERS/SAUNDERS, NUNNALLY, LINDSEY/LINDSAY Henry SANDERS (s/o Henry Simeon SAUNDERS) b. 14 Oct 1824 in possibly Morgan Co. GA, d. 1874 in Jackson Par. LA (Choudrant). He married Mary Ann (Madeline) NUNNALLY, April 03, 1844 in Walton Co. or Upson Co. GA. Children of Henry Sanders and Mary NUNNALLY are: 1) Sarah Ann SANDERS, born 1845; died 1910. She married William WILSON. 2) Mary Anne Elizabeth SANDERS, born 1846. She married William COLVIN. 3) Louisa I. SANDERS, born 1848. 4) William Marion SANDERS, born 1849; died 1905. He married Elizabeth C. BENNETT. 5) Martha Luvaney SANDERS, Matt, born 1852; died 1919. She married Thomas PARDUE. 6) Nancy Ann Arphy SANDERS, born 1854. She married George ROGERS. 7) Jane SANDERS, born 1856. She married Elbert JOHNSON. 8) David Marion SANDERS, born 1857; died 1894. He married Jennie Lula EMBRY. 9) John Horatio SANDERS, born April 26, 1860 in Cherokee Co. AL (Centre?); died April 10, 1951 in Caddo Par. LA. (Shreveport). He married Jalutia Jane LINDSAY February 17, 1880. (see below) 10) Henrietta SANDERS, born April 26, 1860 in Cherokee Co. AL (Centre?). I do not know how many of these children remained in the Jackson Parish area but I believe some of them resided near Eros and others near Choudrant which was located just over the northern border into Lincoln Parish. Henry's 9th child, John Horation SANDERS was my great-grandfather. He lived near an old community called Longstraw. My understanding is that this township of Longstraw went into decline as soon as the railroad was built through Choudrant. All that is left of Longstraw is an old church and nearby cemetery. Our family bible states that John was burried in this cemetery but I have been unable to find confirmation of this. John Horatio SANDERS came to Jackson Parish as a young man. He became Deputy Sheriff AND Mayor of Choudrant. I have been unable to find any details of his political life and feel as though those records have gone by the wayside. John was a tall man with a large white mustache. At some point in his later life he became a livestock dealer and eventually retired to the Shreveport area. John married Jalutia Jane Lindsay/Lindsey. Her parents are thought to have been Thomas Lindsey and Adaline R. SWEENEY but I have been unable to find any documentation for these people in Jackson or Lincoln Parish. All I know about Thomas was that he had a brother and/or father named James. Jeffrey L. I have reason to believe that they are buried in Salem Cemetery in graves marked only by native stones. I am seeking records of Salem Cemetery or other sources to verfy this. I believe James to be the son of Waid BRYAN. Any information on either family will be appreciated. B. Sally Embry ==================== 98-02-24 19:37:24 EST I am a resident of Jackson Parish. I and other members of my family have been doing some research into my family's history. While we have had great sucess in some areas there are still many mysteries to be uncovered. I originally happened upon your site because of the CSA site. I have a Great grandfather who was in the local effort. The problem that I have is that my Mamaw doesn't remember anything relevant about him except that the local chapter of the Veterans put up a headstone for him at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Unfortunately, the headstone only shows that his name was John COX and what his unit was. It has no birthdate or deathdate on the stone. I have found some discrepancies on the information that was given to the Census takers concerning the rest of his family and was hoping that you may be able to offer some tips. Any help that ANYONE may be able to offer would be appreciated as I seem to have ran into another dead end (Temporarily, I hope.). Thank you, Martha W. Patty Burns ==================== 98-02-06 11:22:49 EST My grandmother, Stella Ann BRYAN was born in Jackson Parrish, June 12, 1891. She was the first surviving child of Sally Ann ZEIGLER (b.1-16-1871, d. 8-6-1900) and William B. (Buck) BRYAN (b. 11-30-1866, d.9-21-1945) Sally and Buck were married 12-15-1887. After Sally's death, Buck married a woman from Texas and they had five children. They moved to Olney, Texas about 1906. My mother has a document that gave Buck Legal Tutorship of Sally's children signed by Sally's mother in 1906. Sally's parents were: Cynthia R. McCLENDON, b 3-26-1838 d 8-1-1905 married to Albert C. Zeigler, b 8-29-1844, d 12-12-1872. They were married 4-22-1869. Buck's parents were Stephen Barlow BRYAN, and I have two different birth years, a book my mother found says 1837 but the family stories say 1835. Buck was born to the 2nd wife (there were at least 3 known wives) Needless to say I am a novice to this research but find it extremely interesting. My grandmother, Stella BRYAN, would relate stories of growing up in Lousiana and about her mother. My mother has never been to Louisiana and my sisters and I are planning a trip in April to see if we can find the cemeteries and graves of the BRYAN's, ZEIGLER's and McCLENDON's. They supposedly lived in the Indian Village Community. My mother has a legal description of the homestead written on a tax receipt dated in 1873, 1874, and 1901 that was paid by Mrs. C.R. ZEIGLER. My mother seems to think that Buck could have been a lawman or prehaps just in trouble with the law...stories of a killing and Buck were told, but my mother can't remember. I will be more than happy to send copies of the pages of the Bible, and other documents if you would like to have them. Any help you can provide will be very much appreicated. Julia Childs ==================== 05 Feb 1998 15:45:46 -0700 My mother, sisters and I will be visiting Jackson Parish in April. Can you help us with the location of the Zeigler cemetery at Indian Village. My mother has a tax receipt (with the legal description where Cynthia McClendon ZIEGLER paid taxes in 1873,1874, 1878, 1897 and 1904. There is also a document that gives custody of her deceased daughter's (Sally) children to William B. BRYAN(Sally's husband) in 1906. My mother really wants to find the home place and the cemeteries. Any help will be appreciated. Would there be any family left in the area? My mother is the daugther of Stella Ann Bryan, Sally's oldest daughter.
