Ansley is the home of the Davis Brothers Lumber company. The town was settled by the Davis Brothers and their employees in the later part of the year 1901, before the town was established here, a dense forest of yellow pine, black gum, red gum, oak and hickory were in evidence. These men are pioneers of the lumber industry, having begun their career as lumber men in Nevada County, Arkansas when they were mere boys. In 1881, the company was incorporated and chartered in the year of 1902. The pine mill began operation in December 17th, 1902. The first line was sawed at 4 p.m. by P. N. Davis, Manager, but who at that time was sawyer for the mill. The planning mill began operation in March 1903. In 1914, a hardware mill was erected which increased the daily capacity to one hundred and twenty-five thousand feet. The company owns many miles of railroad tract and a sufficient amount of locomotives to keep a generous supply of logs for each of the two saw mills. The former officers of this company were: James M. Davis, President; John M. Davis, vice-president; N. M. Davis, General Manager; R. W. Davis, Secretary and Treasurer. Death having removed three of the former officials and the fourth incapacitated because of ill health, the company has been re-organized and the roster is as follows: G. A. Davis, President; Mrs. R. W. Davis, vice-president; Henry Hodde, General Manager; P. N. Davis, Secretary and Treasurer. During the depression, this company continued operation, although at a loss, that they might give employment to their men, many of them having been in the company’s employ for many years. (The writer of this article has been in their employ for 44 years). The lumber industry is the only industry here, as most all of the citizens of this community work for Davis Brothers. In the year 1909, through the generosity of Davis Brothers, in donating a sufficient amount of land, and through the earnest efforts of Professor D. G. Armstrong, Mobley supported by the citizens of this school district, a state approved high school was established which has produced or graduated many boys and girls, who are now holding responsible positions. There are only two religious organizations in Ansley. They are: The Missionary Baptist Church and the Methodist Protestants, who worship in the same building and operate as smooth as bees in a hive. Ansley is proud of her schools and churches. Some of those who were responsible for the settling of the town and the establishing of the school and churches are as follows: Messrs, J. E. LaGrone, W. S. LaGrone, J. N. Landes, H. D. Young, G. W. Rogers, B. J. Mayes, C. A. Moore, L. R. Parker, O. L. Burdine, and the Edwards Brothers. Dr. J. S. McBride who has been the company physician here for 30 years figured prominently in the establishing and maintaining of both church and schools. The many kind deeds of Dr. McBride and Davis Brothers will be remembered by their beneficiaries for years to come. We might state in conclusion, that the Davis Brothers, with a number of their employees, moved to this place in 1901, from Columbia County, Arkansas, near Waldo, where they had operated two mills for 14 years. Edgar got his start at home when his father Bob Avery bought a pair of hand clippers. Edgar and his brothers, Loranza swapped haircuts when Edgar was 14 or 15 years old. Later, he cut his two younger brothers hair and then started cutting hair for others in the community. In 1929 Edgar and his brother Loranza went to Dallas to barber College. He recalls having $100 when he left home, “Sixty dollars went for tuition and barber tools and the other $40 for room and board which was $5 per week, he said. He got a job washing dishes three hours a day to pay for his meals. Before completing the course the Barber College burned. He had to complete his studies at Molers College of hair dressing. He also had to buy new tools. To become a licensed barber in Texas, at the time required 1,000 hours which took about six months to acquire. Upon completion of his course, he was asked to stay and teach and cut hair at Molers. He was given $150 beauty course where he learned to do finger waves and set permanents. He received his diploma from Molers in November 1931 and came back to Jonesboro. Brother Loranza stayed in Dallas. Edgar’s first job was with Carl Scoggins in 1931, earning 40 cents per haircut and 20 cents per shave. After Scoggins closed his shop, Edgar went to Kelly and worked awhile and did some bird watching. When he returned to Jonesboro he worked for Mrs. Alexander. The shop was located where the old Morgan and Lindsey building were and had four chairs. He bought this shop and later sold it to Ed May and went to Monroe where he worked for his uncle Luther Avery. He returned to Jonesboro and bought the Thompson shop, located near Paul Daley on Allen Avenue across from the bus station. At this time haircuts were 35 or 40 cents. He had two chairs in the shop and Jesse Davis, brother of Jimmie Davis was working for him when he closed the shop to go into the service. He stored his chairs and equipment at his home while in the service. Between 1942 and 1945 Edgar was able to cut some hair along with his duties. After the war, he returned to Jonesboro and went to work for Byde Thomas in 1946 and A. C. Holly in 1947. Haircuts had gone to 65 cents. In 1948 he rented the old Post Office building and put in his own shop. He remained there until 1977. Haircuts had gone to $3.00 and $3.50 when he closed up in Jonesboro and moved his shop to his home in the Weston Community. He worked three days a week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and continued to charge $3.00 After 58 years he decided to retire and enjoy country life and more time with his family. He was married to Marguerite Womack Avery who passed away in January 1981, a victim of cancer. Obit: Avery, Thomas M. September 25, 1953 ; Jackson Parish, LA Submitter: Sharon K.
