time, she moved to Winn Parish to live with her daughter until her death. She is buried in Winn Parish. THE SOUTHERN SENTINEL Devoted to the interests of North Louisiana Subscription One Dollar Per Year and the Democratic Party Cash in advance Price 5 cents Winnfield, LA Friday Morning January 15, 1904 Mrs. Susan Chatham To the memory of Mrs. Susan Chatham, who departed this life at 7:00 o'clock on the morning of January 1, 1904. Sister Chatham was one of the oldest women of this section of the country and perhaps the entire parish. She was born February 10, 1821 in the State of Mississippi: married to Mr. Elijah J. Chatham, January 28, 1841: moved thence to Louisiana in the year 1850. She joined the Methodist Church when about 17 years of age. She was left a widow when about 45 years of age with a family of children to care for. Some of them preceded her to the grave and the others were reared in the best circles of society and were all taught to earn the bread they ate. It was the pleasure of this writer to form her acquaintance about two years ago and very soon learned to love her as a mother and friend. She always had something cheerful to say. A good substantial living was the height of her ambition. She did not crave to be rich, but always to have plenty., and I am glad to say the Lord graciously blessed her and gave her the desires of her heart on that line. Though she lived above her four score years, she was remarkably strong and active for a woman of her age, having escaped measles all through her long life, but at this late day contracted the disease and passed away as do well nigh all others of her age. While Sister Chatham was not an outspoken Christian as some people are, yet we hope and expect to meet in the resurrection of the just. She said nothing about her future state, but seemed to be resigned to the will of the Lord. It was the pleasure of this writer to visit her while she was sick and talked and prayed with her, but she expressed no desire to get well. Jas. M. Griggs (The following was found elsewhere in the paper) SOME LOCAL NOTES Mr. Charlie Eagles family is slowly on the mend now, having overed the measles. Mrs. Chatham, who was a member of the family, died from the effects of the disease. She was aged 82 years, 10 months and 2 days.
