Ponder Funeral services for John H. Ponder, age 71, of Quitman, were held at 2:00 PM Monday, April 28, 1986 in the Buck Edmonds Memorial Chapel in Jonesboro. Rev. Troy Garrett and Rev. Stuart Toms conducted the services. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery near Quitman, under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Ponder passed away Saturday, April 26, in the Jackson Parish Hospital after a long illness. He was a native of Jackson Parish, and was a retired electrical engineer, having worked at the Hodge Paper Mill for 33 years. He was also in the CCC Camp in Danville. Mr. Ponder was President of the Civitan Club, was a former Cub Scout Master, and was a member of the Beech Springs Baptist Church. He authored Papa John’s column “Now and Then”, which was printed in the Jackson Independent. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Daisy Durbin Ponder of Quitman; three sons, Mike Ponder and Johnny Ponder, both of Jonesboro and Barry Ponder of Haynesville; Two daughters, Mrs. Sherry Lynn Atkins of Clay and Mrs. Patricia Maxwell of Quitman; his father, Claude H. Ponder of Quitman; one sister, Mrs. Cenie Dry of Biloxi, Miss.; thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. Pallbearers were Billy Ray Peters, Mitch Terrell, Lavon Hinton, Floyd Odenbaugh, Mike Brown and Billy Pipes. Honorary pallbearers were Ray Pullin, Glen Robinson, Laurice Easley, Jim Gimber, James Gleason, James Shields and all the employees in the Electrial Department at Stone Container in Hodge.
