tivities when, at 6 o'clock Monday afternoon, Mrs. S. J. Quarles passed away at his home about two miles east of Hodge at the ripe age of 81 years. Death came to him not as a result of any painful illness or wasting disease, but as inevitably ordained by the immutable law of nature. His candle of life had burned to the socket; the feeble flame grew dimmer daily, and at last waned into darkness of death.Mr. Quarles resided in Jackson parish throughout the greater part of his life. During his young days he bought his home place east of Hodge, and by the exercise of habits of thrift and industry he developed into one of the leading farmers of his parish. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. John Templeton, and many friends and relatives.Mr. Quarles performed many acts of charity, and was universally esteemed and admired because of his kindly disposition. Services were conducted at his home Tuesday afternoon, after which his remains were tenderly laid to rest in the nearby cemetery, under the auspices of the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge.
