February 22, 1990 Jackson Independent Billy Joe Walker, Head Pressman for The Jackson Independent since April 1981 died in the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport last Friday morning after a short illness. He was 51 years old. Services were held Sunday February 18, 1990 at 2:00 p.m. in the Full Gospel Temple in Jonesboro with Rev David Walsworth officiating. Burial was in the Midway cemetery in the Walker Community under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home. Mr. Walker was born in West Monroe and lived most of his life in Jackson parish. He was a graduate of Weston High School and attended La. Tech. He was a member of the Louisiana Army National Gurard where he rose to the rank of sergeant. He was a member of instor cadre at Ft. Polk and was involved in training infrantry soldiers during the early part of the U.S. involvement in Viet Nam. Mr. Walker worked for the state during the administration of Governor John McKeithen and later worked for the Town of Jonesboro as a Police officer before coming to work at The Jackson Independent. His interest’s covered a wide range of subjects. As an outdoorman, he enjoyed boating, hunting gunsmithing and competitive shooting sports. He was a charter member of the Dugdemora Rifle and Pistol Club here. Survivors include his father, Hubbard Walker of Shreveport; his mother, Mrs. Iva Walsworth of Jonesboro; his wife, Mrs. Jo Ann Walker of Jonesboro; one step-son, Rickey Nomey of Quitman; one daughter, Sandra Walker of Baton Rouge; three step-daughters, Marilyn Goss of Quitman, Tracy Worthington of Hodge and Stacy Smith of Jonesboro; one brother, Sidney Walker of Jonesboro and 5 step-grandchildren.
