All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ************************************************ Tulane Professor Emeritus Dr. Rebecca Carter Dies Dr. Rebecca Davilene Carter, a professor emeritus of surgery at the Tulane University School of Medicine, died Sunday of cancer at Tulane Medical Center. She was 64. Dr. Carter was born in Alma, Ga., and lived in Metairie for the past 25 years. She graduated from Valdosta State College in Valdosta, Ga., and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. She did her internship and residency at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Ga. She taught at Tulane from 1970 to 1994, becoming an assistant professor in 1974, associate professor in 1978 and professor in 1983. She also was an adjunct professor at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and director of the Surgical Oncology Research and Education Division of General Surgery at the School of Medicine. Dr. Carter was a former chairwoman of the Surgery Committee at Charity Hospital, clinical director of surgical services at Charity's Surgery Center and chief of surgery at Lallie Kemp Hospital in Independence. She was a former president of the American Association for Cancer Education, chairwoman of the Louisiana Division of the American Cancer Society, president of the society's New Orleans chapter, co-principal investigator of the Southwest Oncology Group and member of the Physician Advisory Committee at Hospice New Orleans. She was a longtime board member and former chairwoman of the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund. She was the co-author of "Tumors of Bone: A Programmed Instruction Text" and many articles and book chapters. Survivors include her companion, Maxie Parker; a brother, Lindol Carter of Oklahoma City; and a sister, Lynette Carter of Jacksonville, Fla. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories. Source: Times Picayune 02-18-1997
