George, who served an 8 1/2 -month appointment as Jefferson Parish sheriff in 1979-80, died Thursday at his home. He was 78. Mr. George was born in New Orleans and lived in River Ridge for the past 38 years. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and an Army veteran of World War II. After working for the Sheriff's Office for 13 years as a comptroller, Mr. George was elevated by Sheriff Alwynn Cronvich to chief deputy on the afternoon of July 11, 1979, and became sheriff that night when Cronvich resigned. Cronvich quit in an agreement with the U.S. attorney's office after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor wiretapping violations. He then ran for another term but lost to Harry Lee. Mr. George resigned as sheriff March 31, 1980, three months before the term ended, returning to his job of comptroller and allowing Lee to take office early. He later retired from the Sheriff's Office. Mr. George was a parishioner of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church and a member of its Ushers Society. Survivors include his wife, Helen Smith George; a son, Robert A. George; two daughters, Patricia G. Freeman and Kathryn G. Dement; a brother, Henry R. George Jr.; a sister, Beverly George Cowart; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass will be said Monday at 11 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories. Source: Times Picayune 11-29-1997
