Green Sr., a retired Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy and former Louisiana State Parole Board member, died Friday of cancer at his home. He was 78. Mr. Green was born in Vacherie and lived in Marrero for the past 71 years. He attended Gilbert Academy and graduated from McDonogh No.35 High School. He attended Xavier University and graduated from Loyola University. Mr. Green was active in civic, church and community affairs in Marrero and Jefferson Parish for more than 50 years and was the first leader of the Sheriff's Office's junior deputy program for African-American youths. In the mid-1960s, a junior deputy program was in effect for white youths, and Mr. Green helped create one for black youths, said his son, state Rep. Kyle M. Green. In that program, Mr. Green took the youths on cross-country cultural, historical and recreational trips from 1964 through 1974. He arranged the travel routes to include Washington, D.C., Atlanta and every Southern town that had a historically black college or university or that had elected a black mayor or chief of police. He also took the junior deputies to world's fairs in New York City and San Antonio. Mr. Green also was a retired Jefferson Parish Housing Authority administrator. In 1992, Gov. Edwin Edwards appointed him to the Parole Board, on which he served for four years. Mr. Green was a founding member of the Ernest Lemieux Post of the American Legion and Knights of Peter Claver St. Joseph the Worker Council No.267. Several of Mr. Green's children are active in politics and public service in the metropolitan area. Kyle Green represents a portion of the West Bank of Jefferson Parish in the House, while another son, Alan J. Green, is a District Court judge in Jefferson. Among his daughters, Andrea Green Jefferson is married to U.S. Rep. William J. Jefferson, Lori Green Gerdes is an assistant U.S. attorney and Vanessa C. Green is an assistant attorney general. "My daddy was one who believed in serving the community," Kyle Green said. "And he instilled those values in all of us." Other survivors include his wife, Bernice Johnson Green; three other sons, Anthony G., Brian T. and Herman A. Green Jr.; three other daughters, Jacqueline M. Green, Susan Green Hughes and Lisa Green Campbell; two brothers, Henry and Earl Green; 27 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 455 Ames Blvd., Marrero. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 8 a.m., followed by recitation of the rosary at 9 a.m. and a Knights of Peter Claver ceremony. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park.
