Guillot died April 2. He was 86. The firefighters of David Crockett Fire Department respectfully stood at attention during the Saturday ceremony on Lafayette Street in Gretna. It was a fitting tribute to Guillot's life as a firefighter. Guillot's former occupation was pressman for Rau's Ex-Cel Printery. He worked there when Rau's printed the Livaudais Junior High student newspaper. It made me think about a recent article I read explaining that few schools have newspapers anymore. Schools cited their reasons, among which were lack of certified people to guide the students and a prohibitive cost. Livaudais students stayed after school; they gathered the news and stories from students; they learned to lay out a rough copy with the help of a T-Square, then cut and pasted and submitted it to Rau's. The finished product was always expensive, but it sold. Metrovision Economic Development Partnership and the Chamber/New Orleans and the River Region, along with businesses, education, government and community groups have said students must be a top priority if they are to become productive citizens in the 21st century. Seven parishes - Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, and St. John - will be asked to hold public forums. The forums will elicit everyone's opinions as to what skills and knowledge seniors should possess when they leave high school. Roles awaiting high school graduates will also be discussed. Gretna Mayor Ronnie Harris plans to hold a public forum May 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Your water bill will give specifics. The Greater Gretna Civic Association invites the public to attend the association's 10th anniversary celebration April 23 at 7 p.m. at the White House, 209 Lafayette St. Awards will be presented and refreshments will be served. For information, call 366-2500 or 366-1510. The Westside Missionary Baptist Association Women's Department will sponsor an Appreciation Celebration Luncheon to honor three outstanding women: Dorothy Jett, Carrie Harry and Elnora Scott. The public is invited to attend this luncheon Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Second Highway Baptist Church, 1533 Haydel Drive, Marrero. A donation of $10 is suggested. Driving forces behind the event are: the Rev. Roy Jackson, pastor; Clara Byes, president of the Women's Department; the Rev. Wilbert Tross, association president; and the Rev. Edmond Walker, Women's Department adviser. For information, call Byes at 368-5332. As one of Twilight Gardeners' civic beautification projects, each school in Gretna was presented $300 to purchase benches, tables, bird baths or feeders. St. Cletus' check, presented by Cathy Orgeron and Rosie Harris, will be used to help defray the cost of wooden benches for the children to enjoy outdoors.
