All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** ************************************************ RETIRED LAWYER, ACTIVIST RENE PASTOREK IS DEAD Rene August Pastorek, a retired lawyer and former interim member of the Jefferson Parish School Board, died Wednesday of congestive heart failure at his home. He was 66. Mr. Pastorek was appointed to the School Board in September 1968 by Gov. John McKeithen to fill an unexpired term. During a time of fierce feuds on the board, the appointments of Mr. Pastorek and Harry Hanson were challenged in court. After a judge ruled the appointments had been made illegally, McKeithen reappointed the two men in October. They served until December. Mr. Pastorek was born in New Orleans and lived in Gretna for many years. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and the Loyola University School of Law. He was in the Army from 1953 to 1956, serving with the Judge Advocate General's Corps in Alaska. On returning to New Orleans, he worked as a clerk to U.S. District Judge Herbert Christenberry and an assistant U.S. attorney before beginning private practice on the West Bank in 1959. Mr. Pastorek was a former president of the St. Joseph Parochial School Board and was elected to the Archdiocesan School Board in the early 1970s. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, was a co-founder of the West Bank Boys Club of Gretna and was president of the West Bank Rotary Club in 1967-68. He was a captain for many years at Manresa Retreat House. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Rogers Pastorek; three sons, Paul, Guy and Marc Pastorek; three daughters, Robin P. Thurston, Nicole P. Fuller and Monet P. France; a brother, Ralph Pastorek; and 16 grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 West Bank Expressway, Harvey.
