Clarence Wells Sr., associate pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and retired pastor of True Vine Baptist Church in Westwego, died Tuesday of heart failure at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 83. The Rev. Wells was born in St. James Parish and lived in Westwego for many years. He became pastor of True Vine in 1953, said his niece, Geraldine Young. He retired because of his failing health, she said. At Shiloh, he served as an adviser to younger ministers and occasionally preached. The Rev. Wells also was a retired employee of Celotex Corp. He was a member of Celotex Corp. Local 4-179, Oscar J. Dunn Lodge 85, F&AM, and the Shiloh Benevolent Society. Survivors include a son, Clarence Wells Jr.; a sister, Mary Tice; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 1419 Fourth St., Westwego. Dismissal will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Cemetery in Westwego. Davis Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Times Picayune 01- 31-1998
