Four former cities and numerous faubourgs on the east bank of the river are now part of New Orleans. Prior to 1853 the Jefferson-Orleans parish line was at Felicity Street in New Orleans. In 1853 the City of New Orleans incorporated the old City of Lafayette and the parish line moved to Toledano St. In 1870 Jefferson City was incorporated into New Orleans and the parish line moved to Lowerline St. This street was the Lower Line of the old City of Carrollton. In 1874 the City of Carrollton was incorporated into New Orleans and the parish line moved to where it is today. The Borough of Free Port (or Freeport), up-river from New Orleans, was later known as Jefferson City. Southport, Kennerville and Metairie are all in Jefferson Parish on the east bank of the river. On the west bank of the river are a series of communities. Algiers, once a city, is now part of New Orleans. Freetown was in McDonogh(ville) and was where freed slaves lived. John McDonogh's plantation, McDonoghville, spanned across the parish line, about half in each parish. The down-river half of McDonoghville is now considered part of the Algiers section of New Orleans. The up-river half of McDonoghville, the Town of Brooklyn, and all of Mechanicham are now part of Gretna. The McDonogh(ville) Cemetery is split on a diagonal, half in Orleans parish and half in Jefferson parish. Maddon, is natural tutor to her son, Frank Preston Hampson, a minor. She had secured a special mortgage for $2,700 for her child's inheritance share after John Hampson's death. She prays for release of that mortgage in favor of another mortgage. The first mortgage was for property bounded by Fourth at the corner of Monroe (300' by 300') and on ten lots in square 56. She prays for release in favor of seven lots with a total of 150' front on Canal Avenue (Carrollton Avenue) X 175' front on Third. Family meeting of: Frank Preston and Thomas Preston of Carrollton, Shepperd Layton of New Orleans, all cousins. And of friends, William Williams and Samuel Purcelle; and under-tutor, C. C. Porter. Inventory appraisers are J. D. Kamper and J. Miller. Edwin White, Jefferson Parish Judge, 12 June 1863. The family meeting insists she get permission from Thomas Maddon, or from the judge to do it without Maddon's OK. John Hampson's succession was #238. Frank Preston Hampson also inherited 50 shares of the Carrollton RR Co. Mary Ann wanted that sold in exchange for U.S. Savings Bonds so the interest would help support the son. In Mary Ann's words, John Hampson was a principal or chief engineer and machinist of the Carrollton RR Co., having learned the trade in New York many years past. Another of John Hampson's sons, Edward, by a previous marriage is now Vice-President of Woodsmann Steam Engine Company of Utica, NY. Edward has offered a four-year apprenticeship for Frank for cost of his room and board. She claims her income is insufficient. It consists of $40/month income from rental property she owns. She also owns her home. C. C. Porter objects saying her income should be more than sufficient to pay for the boy's needs and that he feels the boy's health would be in danger in the North as he health is not good. At film mark 000285 Edward P. Hampson of N.Y. petitions the court that he is a co-heir with Mary Ann Hampson for 3/4 of the succession of his deceased brother, Frank. This is signed 21 March 1873, Thomas N. Martin, Judge. When Frank died in Carrollton, 22 July 1871 he owned: 1) 3 lots bounded by Canal Avenue, First, Short and Levee streets. Each with 28' 7" front on Jena by 110' deep. 5) 20 shares of stock in the New Orleans and Jackson Railroad. The mother received 1/4 of his property and the brother received 3/4, but the deceased owed his mother $1,000. [NOTE: Canal Avenue in Carrollton is now Carrollton Avenue. First Street is now St. Charles Avenue.] [NOTE: Plaquemine street is now Coliseum street. Levee street is now buried by the present levee. 295 Vollmer, Mrs. Philip S 1868-1880 2-X 04026143934913 1 May 1873 Gretna 000298 295 Kistner, Catherina S 1868-1880 2-X 04026143934913 1 May 1873 Gretna 000298 Catherine Vollmer filed her will in New Orleans by Joseph Cohn, Notary Public and witnessed by Ernest Schmidt, John D. Gaisser and Charles Frederick Bauy (?). The widow of Philip Vollmer, she was the daughter of Valentine Kistner and Magdalena Knobloch (or Noblauch). Catherine was born in Lindau, Rhenish Bavaria Germany. She was sixty years old at the time of the will 5 Aug 1869. She died 1 May 1873 and will was opened 5 May 1873. She appointed George Hildenbraud of Gretna sole executor of her estate. She gives to her sister-in-law, Barbara Vollmer, widow of Peter Vollmer in Goecklingen, near Landau, all the lands and buildings she now occupies in Goecklingen which Catherine had inherited from her husband, Philip. The rest of her property is in Louisiana and is to go to the following: 1/3 to the children of Lorenz (Laurence) Vollmer, namely; Frederick Vollmer, Josephine Vollmer, Frederick "Fritz" Vollmer, and Louise Vollmer, wife of John Henting, all of Memphis, Tennessee. 1/3 to Catherine's brother-in-law, Jacob Vollmer, of Louisville, KY. Jacob and Lorenz were brothers of Philip. 1/3 to Louise Hildenbrand and Georgiana Hildenbraud, the children of George Hilderbraud of Gretna, LA. Catherine's attorney was Octave Morel. Catherine died 1 May 1873. Josephine Vollmer wed Henry G. Hampee (?) of Memphis, TN on 29 May 1860. Louise Vollmer, wife of John Hending, died 19 Oct 1870 in Memphis, leaving a son, now (1873) seven years old. Jacob Vollmer died "a few years ago" (as of 1873). Frederick "Fritz" Vollmer's power of attorney is dated 26 May 1873. Lorenz's wife (mother of the Memphis heirs) was Frederica Vollmer. Percy Roberts, attorney for the Memphis heirs, filed for them 12 June 1873. Fritz gets 1/9th of U. S. estate. The relative in Germany was thought to have "imigrated to parts unknown." The heirs are later found. Germany heirs: John Jacob Knoblock wed Catherine Kaupler and begat Maria Magdalena & George Peter Knobloch. Marie Magdalena Knoblock wed Valentine Kistner and begat Catherine Kistner who wed Philip Vollmer. George Peter Knobloch wed Christine Tochleimann (or Tochlermann). He died 9 May 1859 and she died 15 Apr 1841 in Landau, Germany. They begat 5 children: 1) Marie Magdalena Knobloch, widow of Nicolous Newmann, a bookbinder in Landau; 2) Philip Daniel Knobloch; 3) Magdalina Rosine Knobloch, widow of Caspar Spatz; 4) Carolina Dorothea Knobloch, widow of Conrad Frishwald; 5) Christine Rosine Knobloch, wife of Gottlieb Reis. The Knobloch's are represented by agent, John Kruthchmitt, of New Orleans via A. J. Villere, attorney. Evidently there was another Kistner daughter because there is another document talking about the following. Christina Louise Kistner, wife of John George Shoemaker, laborer, both deceased, begat: 1) Catherine Shomacher born 14 Feb 1824, lives in America. 2) Elizabeth Shoemacher, b. 24 Aug 1827, d. 3 Jul 1850. Her son, George Shoemacher, cabinetmaker in Landau. Christina Louise Kistner Shoemaker, without profession, died 24 Jan 1852. Francis Kistner, soldier in the Foreign Legion in Algiers, "died long ago". Catherine Jacobs Kistner, widow of Gaphsh Orsolf, lithographer, in America. The data about the Shomacher and Kistner families was sent by the mayor of Landau 25 Sept 1874. The Germany decendants of Peter Knoblock say Jacob Vollmer died before Catherina Kistner Vollmer and as such they should be the heirs to Jacob's share because Jacob had no children. Property 1: 2 lots in Gretna, LA on Lafayette street with buildings, bounded by 2nd, 3rd streets. Each has 30' front on Lafayette by 150' deep, acquired by Philip Vollmer 5 August 1844. Property 2: 2 lots in Mechanicham (now Gretna), 30' front on Newton by 110' depth and front on 4th street. Second property was acquired by Vollmer from succession of Frank E. Wilms 26 March 1851. Matthews totaling $3,250.00. She had $355 in Confederate bank notes and a bank balance of $238.70 in the Bank of Louisiana. [NOTE: on the inventory in Gretna.
