He lived in Elton for a year and was a member of the Air Force Reserve until 1957. He returned to Flagler, working in the Ford garage. He ran a concrete-block plant and was a contractor for several years. He also was superintendent of the Sanitation Department in Aurora, Colo., and was a former engineer and research director for the Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association. A native of Lafayette, he studied for the priesthood at St. Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict; St. Mary's in Baltimore, Md.; and the North American College in Rome, Italy, where he was ordained in 1925. He served as assistant pastor of St. Michael Parish in Crowley and Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles. He was pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church from 1930 to 1974 and continued to live in Welsh after his retirement from active ministry. He was made a monsignor in 1952. He had been active in youth, civic and fraternal organizations in Welsh and Jeff Davis and had received the Silver Beaver award of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years. He wrote several books about Cajun French and the Cajun heritage that became best sellers. He received international recognition for the projects and was in demand for radio, television, and newspaper interviews.
