He was a native of Welsh and lived most of his life in Vinton. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a retired insulator. He was a member of the Vinton Lions Club, and he was a Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of Vinton United Methodist Church. Survivors include three sons, Ralph Kimball of Alexandria, Mike Kimball of Lafayette and Robert Kimball of Los Angeles; two daughters, Ruth Kimball of Vinton and Tena Kimball of Starks; one sister, Wanda Farmer of Rose of Sharon, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was a native of Lake Arthur and a former resident of Lake Charles and Jennings. She had lived in Welsh for three years. She was co-owner of many general-merchandise stores in Jennings, Welsh, Opelousas and Church Point, and she and her husband were partners in LaCour and Riquelmy. She was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Jennings and of Our Lady Queen of Heaven in Lake Charles. She was a member of the Third Order of Franciscans. Survivors include one daughter, Gwindola Miller of Lake Charles; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren. A resident of Sulphur for the past 10 years, she and her late husband owned an operated Green Oaks Cafe in Elton through World War I and World War II serving as a command post and food source for troops during Louisiana Maneuvers. Later they owned and operated portable roller rinks before opening LaFleurs Roller Rink in Sulphur. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She was a retail sales clerk at Lerner's Dress Shop for many years and she was a greeter at the Wal-Mart on Nelson Road for 12 years. She was an Avon representative for 40 years. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Barbara) Dugas of Lake Charles; two granddaughters; and four grandchildren. David M. Laird — 12/14/2000 CONROE, Texas — Funeral services for David M. Laird, 75, were held Monday, Dec. 11, in Cashner Funeral Home. Burial was in Houston National Cemetery. Mr. Laird died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, in Conroe. He was a native of Houston and had lived in Conroe for 23 years. He was an aviation cadet in World War II. He earned a degree in petroleum engineering from Louisiana State University, and he was a Superior Oil Co. petroleum engineer for many years in Jennings. He taught offshore platform construction and operations to young engineers. He was the first African American elected as alderman for the city of Elton. He was a member of Pope John XXIII Council 153 of the Knights of St. Peter Claver, past Grand Knight and was the Faithful Navigator for Grand Assembly 22 of the Fourth Degree Knights. He was awarded the silver medal of honor, recipient of the Papal Medal "Benemerenti" for services to the church and community. He was a graduate of Carver High School. He received his bachelor's of science degree, master's of art, and Ed.S. degree from McNeese State University. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa International and was a licensed counselor. He was a member of the National Education Association and the Louisiana Education Association. He was a member of the Jeff Davis Parish Association, Family Relations Council of Louisiana and the American Personnel and Guidance Association. He taught in the public school system of Jeff Davis Parish for 32 years. He worked as a counselor at the University of Southwest Louisiana and was employed as a substance abuse counselor with Jeff Davis Chemical Health.
