He was a Marine Corps veteran, a retired Jennings police captain, and a deputy state fire marshal. He received numerous commendations, was an expert in firearms safety and training, and was an FBI- and NRA-certified firearms instructor. He graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and became a U.S. Navy pilot during World War II. After the war, he was employed by the Zigler Flying Service. He later owned and operated his own crop dusting service, Hawthorn and Sons Flying Service Inc. After his retirement in 1980, he wrote several articles for Short Wing Piper News. He recently wrote an article for the first issue of LAAA Magazine. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association. His clubs and organizations include the Jennings Masonic Lodge 249, Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Lake Charles, Habibi Temple of Lake Charles, Jennings Woodmen of the Word Lodge and the Short Wing Piper Club. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jennings and was an active member of the Builders Sunday school class.
