Mrs. Abshire died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, in a local care facility. She was a native of Crowley and had lived in the Welsh area for many years. Mrs. Alexander died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, in a Sulphur hospital. She was a native of Welsh and a resident of Sulphur. She was a member of Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church. She was a past member of the Ladies Altar Society and the FFA Mothers Club. Bertha Mary Arabie — 7/15/2002 Mrs. Bertha Mary Arabie, 84, died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, in her residence. She was a native of Fenton and lived in the Lake Charles area for 27 years prior to moving to Ragley three years ago. She was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church. Arceneaux — 3/7/2002 JENNINGS — Funeral services for Justine Manouvrier Arceneaux, 87, will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 8, from Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church. The Rev. A Scripture wake service will be at 7 p.m. Mrs. Arceneaux died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, in the Jennings hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Jennings. She graduated from Jennings High School as salutatorian. She received the American Legion Award and a scholarship to Louisiana State University. She was a charter member of Alpha Eta Chapter of Phi Mu sorority. She graduated from LSU in 1935. She was Jeff Davis' first elementary music supervisor and helped launch music in the curriculum of the parish schools. She taught in every elementary classroom in the Jeff Davis for two years. She taught private piano lessons. She taught vocal music at Jennings High School. In 1952, she again began teaching vocal music in three Jennings elementary schools. She was an organizer and promoter of the Jennings Music Club. She started the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Jennings, and she was its first presiding officer. In 1966, she became the first full-time librarian at Northside Library. She was a charter member of Alpha Tau Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. She was a trustee of the Jennings Carnegie Library from 1979-1996. She received the Jennings McComb Citizenship Award in 1994. She was the Kiwanis Club Queen the Rotary Anne for the Rotary Club; she furnished music at the weekly meetings for both groups. She was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church. She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America 1468 where she served as grand regent, lecturer, historian and organist. She was a member of the Ladies Altar Society. She served as church organist for 20 years. She received the medal for devoted service and the companion of honor award, both from the Diocese of Lake Charles. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Barbara) Moore of New York, N.Y. and Mrs. Edward (Florence) McNally of Jennings; one sister, Marie Phillips of Jennings; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Arceneaux — 6/14/2002 SWEETLAKE — Perrin Joseph Arceneaux, 72, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in a Lake Charles hospital. He was a native of Welsh and a longtime resident of Sweetlake. He served in the Army in World War II. He was a farmer and a cattleman. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Monceaux Arceneaux of Sweetlake; two sons, Mark Arceneaux of Lake Charles and Tommy Arceneaux of Sweetlake; one brother, James D. Arceneaux of San Antonio; four sisters, Louella Cox of Lafayette, Lydia Ardoin and Anna Whiddon, both of Welsh, and Alvina DeYeide of Houma; his mother, Ella Arceneaux of Welsh; and seven grandchildren. Ardoin — 9/10/2002 WOODLAWN — Arvelian Joseph “A.J.” Ardoin, 60, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a native of Lacassine, and he had lived in Woodlawn for 30 years. He served in the Army in the Korean War. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He helped to form the Lacassine Optimist Club, and he was instrumental in the building of the Lacassine Community Center. He volunteered and served on many parish boards. He was a member of the Jeff Davis Mosquito Control board. He was District 5 commander and post quartermaster of VFW Post 9933 in Moss Bluff and post quartermaster of VFW Post 2130 in Lake Charles. He was a member of American Legion Post 179 of Sulphur. He served on the board of directors for the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Jennings. She was a native of Jennings and had lived in Welsh for many years. She had lived in Lake Charles for the past 23 years. She was a graduate of Welsh High School and attended SLI in Lafayette and McNeese State University. She served as a teacher in the Jeff Davis Parish School System for 34 years. She was a longtime resident of Lacassine, and she lived a short time in Port Arthur, Texas. She worked at the post office as a clerk for her father; she became postmaster when he retired.
