She died Monday in a Gueydan care center. Kenneth Canik — 1/12/2002 LAKE ARTHUR — Funeral services for Kenneth "Chico" Canik, 76, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in Miguez Funeral Home. The Rev. Mr. Canik died at 10:55 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in a Lafayette hospital. He was a native of Lake Arthur and a four-year resident of Jennings. He was a graduate of Lake Arthur High School. He earned an accounting degree from McNeese State University. He served eight years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War, and was a member of the VFW. He worked for 25 years in the state tax department in Baton Rouge. He was interim mayor of Lake Arthur from 1989-1990. Survivors include two sisters, Flora Belle Broussard of Jennings and Mary Maxine Chapman of Lake Arthur; and one brother, Ferdinand Frank Canik of Covington. Willis Carrier — 9/22/2002 BEAUMONT, Texas — Willis Carrier, 66, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in his residence. He was a native of Welsh, lived in New York for 42 years and had lived in Beaumont for two years. He was a carpenter and interior decorator in New York. Survivors include one sister, Dorothy James Sevier of Temecula, Calif.; three aunts, Amy Guidry of Westlake, Elnora Burks of Iowa, La., and Irene Gray of Lake Charles; eight nieces; 11 nephews; 34 great-nieces and great-nephews; 24 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Laura Livingston Charles — 7/26/2002 Mrs. Laura Livingston Charles, 95, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002, in a local hospital. Mrs. Charles was born in Freetown and lived in Roanoke for more than 60 years. She was a long-time member of St. James Baptist Church where she was a deaconess, former president of the senior mission and church secretary. She was also a treasurer of the True Friends Benevolent Association. She was an advocate for the community. Survivors include eight daughters, Gracie Shelton, Flora Roberts and Albertha C. Lilton Chesson Sr. — 8/28/2002 Lilton “Chook” Chesson Sr., 83, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, in a local hospital. He was born May 27, 1919, in Lacassine. He graduated from Bell City High School as co-valedictorian. He co-founded Hackett-Chesson Grocery Store in Sweetlake. He was a World War II veteran. He distributed oil and gas for more than 30 years with Alice Oil and Orleans Oil Co., which was later incorporated as Chesson Oil Co. and Cameron Offshore Services. He was a member of the Louisiana Oil Marketers Association as a Phillips 66 distributor in Southwest Louisiana. He retired in 1977. He was a faithful member of Moss Bluff United Methodist Church and was a longtime member of University United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lou Ethel Derouen Chesson; two sons, the Rev. Randall Chesson of Sulphur and Lilton Chesson Jr. of Lake Charles; three daughters, Arlene Wimberly of Shreveport and Carolyn Langley and Kathy LeLeux, both of Moss Bluff; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was a Jefferson Davis Parish deputy sheriff for three years. He worked for Calcasieu Marine National Bank for 42 years, during which he moved from the Lake Charles branch to Jennings. He became a bank manager in 1946 and retired as a vice president in 1978. He was a president of the Jennings Association of Commerce. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Jennings Golf Club. He was a grand knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was an outdoorsman and a fisherman. Survivors include one son, Henry M. He lived most of his life in Lake Charles and moved to Sulphur 15 years ago. He was valedictorian of the 1959 Marion High School graduating class. Mr. Cormier was the owner of Bon Jour Construction Co. Inc. and was a master electrician in the state of Louisiana. He served faithfully as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for 41 years. He was an inside guard with the Knights of Columbus, Father Daigle Council 2855. He was a former auxiliary policeman and ambulance driver. He was a native of Bell City, where he attended school and ran the commissary on the Illinois Plantation. He moved to Welsh in 1930. He served as Welsh postmaster from 1940 to 1946 and operated Derouen's Jewelry Store from 1946 to 1950. He went to work for the Calcasieu Marine Bank of Welsh in 1949 and was named assistant manager in 1951. In January of 1952, he was named manger of the Cameron branch. He was mayor of Welsh for four years and served on the city council for two years. He was a fourth-degree knight of the Welsh Knights of Columbus. He had served as Boy Scout Master and Sea Scout Master. While living in Cameron, he served as president of the Lion's Club and received the Lion of the Year award. He served as grand knight for the third-degree Knights of Columbus and served as faithful navigator for the fourth-degree Knights of Columbus. He was active in the Louisiana Fur and Wildlife Festival. She served on the board of the Louisiana Interfaith Council of Churches and Missionary Furlough Homes in Austin, Texas, and on the General Assembly's Women's Advisory Committee. She was named Church Woman of theYear in 1976 and was awarded a Lifetime Membership in the Women of the Church. She joined the Women's Auxillary in 1960 and later served as president for several terms. She volunteered as a Pink Lady for more than 30 years. Survivors include her sons, William J.
