She was a lifelong resident of the Andrus Cove-Lake Arthur area. She was a member of the VFW Post 3244 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. She had lived in Lake Charles for the past 23 years. She was a graduate of Welsh High School and attended SLI in Lafayette and McNeese State University. She served as a teacher in the Jeff Davis Parish School System for 34 years. Survivors are one granddaughter, Shawn Stubblefield of Lake Charles. James C. Gauthier — 7/13/2002 JENNINGS — Chief James Charles “J.C.” Gauthier, 81, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Jennings American Legion Hospital. He was a native of Breaux Bridge. He was chief of police, and he served for 25 years. He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific and on Wallis Island in World War II. He was a former member of the Louisiana Police Chiefs Association. He was a member of VFW Post 3686, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society. He celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary Feb. 7, 2002. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Gauthier of Jennings; one son and daughter-in-law, Edward G. and Anna M. Gauthier of Sunset; two grandchildren, Andre E. Gauthier and Gabriel Emile Gauthier. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Athenaise H. He was a graduate of Jennings High School, and he attended Louisiana Technical College/Sowela Campus in Lake Charles. He was a lease operator A in the oil industry. He was a native of Jennings. He was a resident of Sulphur for six years, moving there from Lake Arthur. He was a retired farmer. He was Catholic. Survivors include one daughter, Darlene Schroeder of St. Louis; two sons, Chris Young and Henry Young, both of Sulphur; three sisters, Helen Johnson of Lake Charles, Joyce Istre of Jennings and Mary Jane Skinner of LaVergne, Tenn.; two brothers, Ronnie P. Young of Cravins and Byron Jessie Young of Lake Charles; and 10 grandchildren. His services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 23, in the Miguez Funeral Home chapel. A Scriptural wake service and rosary will be led by Deacon Michael Tramel at 7 p.m. today. Joseph C. Cormier Sr. — 7/25/2002 SULPHUR — Joseph C. Cormier Sr., 61, died at 3:45 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, in Sulphur. Mr. Cormier was born in Fenton. He lived most of his life in Lake Charles and moved to Sulphur 15 years ago. He was valedictorian of the 1959 Marion High School graduating class. Mr. Cormier was the owner of Bon Jour Construction Co. Inc. and was a master electrician in the state of Louisiana. He served faithfully as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for 41 years. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary Rohrman Cormier of Sulphur; one son, Joseph C. Cormier Jr. of Sulphur; one daughter, Tracy Cormier Cripps of San Antonio; one daughter-in-law, Shelly Cormier of Sulphur; one son-in law, John Thomas Cripps Jr. of San Antonio; two sisters, Frances Marie Cormier of Sulphur and Norma Jean Champagne of Lake Charles; two granddaughters, Andrea Renee Cormier and Salena Brooklynn Cormier, both of Sulphur; and one grandson, John Thomas Cripps III of San Antonio. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on North Claiborne and Sweeney streets in Sulphur. James H. Reynolds will officiate. Laura Livingston Charles — 7/26/2002 Mrs. Laura Livingston Charles, 95, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002, in a local hospital. Mrs. Charles was born in Freetown and lived in Roanoke for more than 60 years. She was a long-time member of St. James Baptist Church where she was a deaconess, former president of the senior mission and church secretary. She was also a treasurer of the True Friends Benevolent Association. She was an advocate for the community. Survivors include eight daughters, Gracie Shelton, Flora Roberts and Albertha C. Vital, all of Lake Charles, Ellen Nichols and Jane C. Velaquez, both of Los Angeles, Lillie Haley of Topeka, Kan., Alice Mayfield of Roanoke and Annie Charles Handy of San Jose, Calif.; two sons, Ray Charles of Los Angeles and James Oliver Charles Sr. of Roanoke; one sister, Earline Charles of Roanoke; one brother, Wesley Livingston of Elton; 31 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, in St. James Baptist Church of Roanoke. The Rev. Willie Maynard will officiate. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Jennings under the direction of Fondel Memorial Chapel. Mrs. Louis Gaudin — 7/26/2002 WELSH — Mrs. Louis (Norma Ruth Boucher), 95, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 in the Jennings hospital. Luther Stubblefield — 7/26/2002 Luther Stubblefield, 93, formerly of Welsh, died at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2002, in Lake Charles. Mr. Stubblefield was a born in Liberty, Texas, and was raised in Daisetta, Texas. He attended Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Mr. Stubblefield lived in Welsh from 1942 to 1998, when he moved to Lake Charles. He was the manager of Miller Hardware and Furniture Store for more than 30 years. He served on the board of directors of American Bank in Welsh. Mr. Stubblefield was a member of First United Methodist Church of Welsh, and he served on the church administrative board. Mr. Stubblefield served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the VFW. Survivors include one son, Dr. John Stubblefield of Lake Charles, and one granddaughter, Shawn Stubblefield of Lake Charles. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, in Oaklawn Cemetery in Welsh. The Rev. Mark Goins will officiate. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday in Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Ida Mae Gobert — 7/29/2002 Ida Mae Gobert, 85, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 in a local hospital. She was a native of Elton and had lived in Lake Charles for 60 years. She was a member of Mill St. Church of Christ. Survivors include, two sons, Albert and Kelly Nonnette Jr., both of Beaumont, Texas; two daughters, Lula Margaret Nonnette and JoAnn Nonnette, both of Lake Charles; two sisters, Melva Huff of Salinas, Calif., and Lee Melda Robinson of Bradenton, Fla.; one brother, Wilford Gobert of Elton; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a service manager for a Welsh Ag dealership for more than 30 years, the last four years being at Quality Equipment. Survivors include his wife, Linda Mallett of Hayes; one son, Ricky James Mallett of Welsh; two stepsons, Jude Aymond of League City, Texas, and Gary Aymond of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Wendy Mallett Nunez of Hayes; one stepdaughter, Melissa Aymond of Alexandria; four brothers, Ernest Mallett and Milton Mallett, both of Welsh, Eugene Mallett of Lacassine, and Wilson Mallett of Jennings; one sister, Lallie Brown of Lacassine; and 7 grandchildren. A rosary and scripture service was held Monday. Cliff Miller — 7/30/2002 LACASSINE — Cliff P. Miller, 76, died at 2:06 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2002, at his residence. He was a life resident of the Iowa/Lacassine Community. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 406. He served in the Army during World War II. He was recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a life member of VFW Post 7586 in Iowa. He served as Post Commander in 2001. He was a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 1996. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17. He was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus Council 3006. Survivors include his wife, Mildred “Millie” Broussard Miller of Lacassine; one son, Christopher Miller of Lacassine; two sisters, Helen Boudin of Lake Charles and Inez Humphrey of Moss Bluff; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m., and from 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Steve A. Auble — 7/31/2002 Steve Allen Auble, 47, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, in Irving, Texas. Mr. Auble, beloved brother and uncle, was born Jan. 8, 1955, in Phoenix. He graduated from Welsh High School in May 1973. He joined the Army in August 1973. He worked for Sparkletts Water for 12 years. Survivors include his mother, Gladys Auble of Escondido, Calif.; his wife, Kelly Cottrell of Brookshire, Texas; one son, Brian Cottrell of Port Orchard, Wash.; six brothers, Tom Auble of Welsh, Kenneth Auble of Vista, Calif., Joseph Auble of Roy, Wash., James Auble of Lakeside, Calif., Charles Auble of Black Diamond, Wash., and Michael Auble of Dodge City, Kan.; five sisters, Gladys M. Vowell of Oakman, Ala., Marti Garrison of San Diego, Joan Jones of Welsh, Karen Auble-Avillar of Oakman, Ala. and Susan Langrehr of Great Bend, Kan.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Virgil Auble. His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, in Hixson Funeral Home of Welsh. The Rev. Mike Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Lacassine Cemetery in Lacassine. Visitation is 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. Friday. Pallbearers will be his nephews and friends.
