She was a member of the Jennings Ladies VFW Auxiliary and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Surivors include one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Connie) Navarre of Jennings; one son, Kevin Canik of Jennings; one sister, Amy Hebert of Welsh; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Amelcor and Josephine Chaisson Canik; her husband, John E. Canik; one son, John Michael Canik; and several brothers and sisters. A native of Lake Arthur, he was born on Feb. 21, 1938. He was a resident of Jennings for the past 25 years. He was an accountant and the proprietor of Facts 5, and a past state president and exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Optimist Club, and he served in the Army. He loved to bowl and fish. Survivors include two sons, Carl A. CHAPMAN and wife Vickie of San Antonio and Dwayne E. CHAPMAN and wife Dawn of Jennings; two daughters, Debra A. CHAPMAN of Houston and Catherine E. She also worked in the church’s summer Vacation Bible School program for many years. Ms. Doucet, 55, of Bunkie, La. passed away at 3:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004 at Bunkie General Hospital. She was born Aug. 15, 1949 in Jennings, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. She was a member of David Haas Memorial Methodist Church and Lahey Chapel UMC. She was a school teacher/librarian in Avoyelles Parish for over 30 years. She was a graduate of Hathaway High School, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from McNeese State University and a Master of Education in elementary teaching from Northwestern State University, and SLS in French from LSU, and Library Certification from NSU. She taught 5th Grade and was a librarian at Simmesport Elementary for 16 years and her last 17 years at Bunkie Elementary where her library was her castle. She loved sharing her love of books with all the children she so dearly loved. She was named Avoyelles Parish Teacher of the Year in 1987, as well as regional finalist, and state finalist. She was named Outstanding Young Women of America in 1987. Her love of teaching and books centered her life. Survivors include her twin sister, Glinda Doucet of Bunkie, her sister Pat Compton of Jennings, her two brothers and sisters in-law Elmer and Jean Doucet of Jennings and Dan and Bernadette Doucet of Niceville, Florida., sister-in-law Nakita Doucet of Garland, Texas. and several nieces and nephews. He was born July 6, 1911 in Tepetate and was a resident of Jennings. Growing up in the country areas of Pine Island and Iota, he enjoyed breaking in horses, a trade he learned alongside his father, Christoval Doucet. After he and his wife married, his mother, Melanie Bertrand Doucet, moved in with them and this was a time he cherished. He was a member of Our Lady Help Christians Catholic Church. Mr. Doucet worked as a heavy equipment operator for Guy Scoggins, retiring at age 75. Among his many jobs he performed, he was most proud of the foundation work he laid for building the town Lake Jackson, Texas, and the nuclear plant in St. Francisville. He enjoyed playing the accordion and didn’t mind letting his children, grandchildren and “adopted grandchildren” play the accordion. He enjoyed listening to Cajun French music. He shared information with cousins on the Doucet family genealogy. After retiring he started a new hobby, repairing lawn mowers. Mr. Doucet enjoyed visiting with family and friends, spoiling his friends’ children and being a practical joker. Mr. Doucet was an avid Saints fan and also followed the actions of the Cowboys. Most of all he cherished his family. Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. until the time of services. Survivors include three sons and their spouses, L.J. Having completed faithful service to her country she moved to Sulphur where she lived most of her life, she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sulphur, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and also a member of Calcasieu Members of Educators. Mrs. Dougherty taught elementary school in Sulphur for many years and retired from RW Vincent in 1974. Survivors include two sons; Michael A. (Tony) Dougherty of Sulphur, Kenneth L.
