Mrs. Babin was born on Dec. 30, 1918, in Fenton and had lived in Lake Charles for 70 years. She was a graduate of Welsh High School. She worked at W.O. Moss Regional hospital for 17 years as a switchboard operator. She was a faithful member of St. Margaret Catholic Church for 57 years. She loved to spend time with her family and friends and will always be remembered as a great cook. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Guillory of Lake Charles; sons, C.G. Babin Jr. of Lake Charles and Robert Paul Babin Sr. and wife Kathy of Waller, Texas; grandchildren, Gina Guillory Melanson, Lisa Kaye Cormie, Allyson Ann Babin, Debra Lynn Babin Guiterrez, Monique Babin Elam and Robert Paul Babin Jr.; eight great-grandchildren; special niece and friend, Jeri Chalmers; dear family friend, Stephen deLaunay; and a host of close friends and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Babin Sr.; parents, Adam and Aristelia Savant; son, James Allen Babin; and brothers, Morris Savant and Adam Savant Jr. Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, in Johnson Funeral Home. LCAP 01/18/2006 FENTON — Ivan L. Baker, 92, a resident of Fenton for the past 61 years, was called to his heavenly home Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at Villa Maria Retirement Center in Lake Charles. Mr. Baker, a native of Vermillion Parish, was born to Isaac L. Baker and Oleana McDaniel on July 20, 1913. He was a graduate of Baton Rouge High School and SLI (now ULL in Lafayette), where he lettered in track and field. He received a MS from LSU in Baton Rouge. He was a World War II veteran and a recipient of the Bronze Star. He served in the European Theatre as a first lieutenant in the Field Artillery. Mr. Baker taught Vocational Agriculture at Fenton High School for 21 years and worked in the Louisiana State Department of Education as an area vocational agriculture supervisor for 12 years. He led many young men to excellence in FFA including state and national honors. He retired in 1973 and spent his retirement fishing and traveling with his wife. He was a faithful member of Fenton Baptist Church and walked with his Savior through most his life. Mr. Baker is survived by his loving wife of more than 64 years, Irene Broussard Baker; two daughters, Brenda Baker Hoppe and husband Jimmy of Iowa, La., and Rebecca Baker Stein and husband Herb of New Orleans; four grandchildren, Steven Hoppe and wife Jeannie of Ft. Worth, Caryl Hoppe of New Orleans, William Baker Steen and wife Amy of Houston, and Richard Stein of New Orleans; and four greatgrandchildren, Miranda, Nicole and Brandon Hoppe of Fort Worth, and Caitlin Stein of Houston. Lucille died at 7:49 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at Kinglsey Place in Lake Charles. A native of Jennings, she was a resident of Lake Charles moving back to Jennings in 2001. She was a graduate of the Jennings High School and member of River Road Historical Society, Destrahan Descendant Guild and Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society She worked during World War II for Brown and Root in Houston and moved to Lake Charles in 1951 to work for Firestone Tire and Rubber as payroll clerk until her retirement in 1970. Her hobbies were gardening, cooking and making Ragedy Ann and Ragedy Andy dolls, which she donated to Destrahan Plantation Gift Shop. She was a direct descendent of the Harvey Destrahan family. Survivors include Julie Ann Bayhi, godchild and niece; Dr. LeeRoy and Kathleen Morgan, cousin and their children: Kim Morgan, David and Leslie Morgan, Chris and Kerry Bruno, Eric and Brenda Morgan. BERTRAND, Dr. Al LCAP 02/28/2006 Dr. Al Bertrand, retired LSU Boyd Professor Emeritus and world renowned Rural Sociologist, departed this life on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was 87 years of age. Dr. Bertrand was born in southwest Louisiana near the town of Elton, where French was spoken almost exclusively and became his first language. He began school in Elton and completed high school in DeQuincy, where his parents moved when he was seven years old. From the mid-1920’s until he left home in 1936, his family lived on a small farm where he was one of nine children who learned the meaning of hard work and discipline while surviving the aftermath of the Great Depression. Al graduated from high school in 1935 and complete his Bachelors Degree from LSU in 1940. He went on to advanced studies and earned a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky, and a Ph.D. from LSU. During his stay in Kentucky, he met his future bride, Nickie. His professional career spanned 60 years and included four years of service in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, 37 years on the faculty at LSU, four years as executive director of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association and various adjunct teaching positions at Universities throughout the U.S. Dr. Bertrand was the author or co-author of 16 books, more than 50 monographs and technical bulletins, more than 100 articles publishes in professional journals and in addition, he wrote 25 chapters or sections in books and encyclopedias. He was characterized by his professional colleagues as a rural sociologist, “who combined theory and practice and added his own brand of humanity.” He is fondly remembered by generations of colleagues and students in the field of rural sociology. Honors include first American to serve as president of the World Congress of Rural Sociology; member of the “Fellows Society” of the University of Kentucky; inducted into the LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction and given LSU’s highest rank of Boyd Professor; membership in numerous honorary and scholastic organizations; and international recognition for his contributions to his field of Rural Sociology. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary Nic Ellis Bertrand; children, William Ellis Bertrand, Ph.D., and his wife, Jane Trowbridge Bertrand, Ph.D. of New Orleans, and Mary Lynne Bertrand Thames, Ph.D., and her husband, Marvin E. Thames, Ph.D., of Mandeville. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer and Stephanie Thames and Katherine and Jacob Bertrand; and siblings, Isabelle Fotenos, Shirley Bertrand, Nettie Sue Walker, Dennis Bertrand and Huey Bertrand. She was a native of Lacassine and lived in Welsh since she was 18. She was the owner and operator of Murphy’s Grocery and Liquor, Max’s Clothing Store and Murphy’s Grocery in Bayou Chenne. She was as dedicated to her buisness as she was to her family. Spending time with her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren was the most important aspect of her elderly years. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters for more than 25 years. He earned two purple hearts and a bronze star. From 1951 to 1973 he served the community of Lake Arthur as a Volunteer Fireman, Civil Defense Director, Boy Scout Leader, Baseball Coach and Umpire. He was a devout Catholic and Knight of Columbus Member. One of the things we fondly remember is his boundless determination and energy. While Boy Scout Troop 69 leader in 1969, he made up his mind that all the members of the Scout Troop would attend the National Jamboree in Idaho. Many were unable to afford the cost. He tirelessly organized fundraisers and as a result all the members were able to attend. Mr. Black died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday, June 1, in Jennings American Legion Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Jennings. He was a graduate of Jennings High School and SLI, now ULL, with a degree in economics and business. He attended naval officer training school in Chicago. He was a naval officer on the USS Concord during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 3686 and James O. Hall American Legion Post 19. He taught in the Navy program at Rice University. After the war he returned to Jennings to go into business with his father. They owned Black’s Hardware and Furniture Store. As manager he reorganized the Jennings Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Pachyderm Club. He was past-president of the Zigler Museum and the Jennings Golf Association. He was chairman of the board at Jennings Federal Savings and Loan for many years. He was an avid golfer, sailor and talented artist. He was a former deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church of Jennings. He was a member of Jennings United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the men’s Upper Room Bible class and the finance committee. He was a devoted husband and father. Survivors include his wife, Maxine Dunphy Black of Jennings; one daughter, Celia Joe Tharpe of Jennings; and two grandsons, Joseph Gregory Arnette and Daniel Wade Arnette. He was a lifelong resident of Welsh, a graduate of Welsh High School and a veteran of Desert Storm. He worked in the construction field and loved to ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He lived life to the fullest and was loved by all who knew him. Mark Kraus of the Lake Charles Police Department, Forest Bordelon, 37, was driving his motorcycle on the Interstate 10 bridge around 9:46 p.m. While attempting to change lanes, his motorcycle struck the rear left side of a vehicle in front of him. BROUSSARD, Col. James H. American Press:2006 Nov 21 Col. James H. “Bruce” Broussard, 81, of Toccoa, Ga., died at his home on Veterans Day. He was born Aug. 30, 1925, in Houston to Sidney and Edna LeJeune Broussard and grew up in Welsh. During World War II, he participated in the Pacific campaign, including amphibious landings at Luzon and other Philippine islands. After serving his tour of duty with the Army, ending as a first sergeant, he earned a mathematics degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, where he was the first cadet commandant of the first graduating class of ROTC. He joined the Air Force as a second lieutenant. He earned his wings in 1952 and flew 100 missions in Korea in the F-80. He went on to fly the F-84, T-33 and T-38. Bruce was assigned to fly the F-105 in 1963. He flew 168 missions in 1968-69 in Vietnam as executive officer of the 357 TFS at Takhli. Then after Vietnam at Kadena, Okinawa, and Kwang Ju, Korea, Bruce commanded the 12th TFS. His military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters. After retirement from the Air Force in 1976, he moved to Friendswood, Texas, and began work at Johnson Space Center on the space shuttle program as a software test engineer. He retired in 2004 at the age of 79. His love of flying knew no bounds; his last flight as a pilot was at Toccoa in July 2006, Mooney 9615M. The Rev. Clyde Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in Thornwell Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home of Lake Arthur. Mrs. Byler’s body was cremated. She died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday, May 11, in her residence. A native of Lobdell, she resided in the Lake Arthur-Thornwell area. She graduated from DeQuincy High School. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, the Ladies Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Morris R. “Bobby” and Barbara Byler and Philip LAKE and Frances Byler, all of ARTHUR — A memorial service for Mrs. Sadie Mary Byler, 90, will be at noon today, May 13, 2006, Lake Arthur; one sister, Mrs. Bernice Braud of Baton Rouge; one sister-in-law, Lois Speeg of Baton Rouge; five grandchildren, Chris Hymel and husband Dennis, Tricia Rapp and husband Damon, Suzanne Guillory and husband Tait, Erin Byler and Jay Byler; and four great-grandchildren, Colby Rapp, Myles Hymel, Sadie Guillory and Gray Guillory.
