Cain Jennings soldier killed in Iraq BY DORIS MARICLE LAKE CHARLES AMERICAN PRESS JENNINGS — One week after his life was cut short by a car bomb in Iraq, Cpl. Marcus Cain was remembered Saturday as a young man proud to serve his country who paid the ultimate sacrifice. “He was proud to serve us,” family friend Clarence Pete said. “It was his desire to get out of Jennings and make something of his life. That was his goal.” Pete said Cain joined the military right out of high school in hopes of bettering himself. “He wanted to go to school, learn a trade and a skill,” he said. “And he did so following the footsteps of his family, and he went without reservation.” Cain, a 2003 graduate of Jennings High, was one of five family members who, as their father did, served in the military. Three of them, including two sisters, are on active duty. Cain was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division’s 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, at Fort Hood, Texas. He was killed Sept. 14 by a bomb hidden in a vehicle in western Baghdad. He had just re-enlisted, funeral director Victor Raphael said. “He loved serving his country and did it well,” Raphael said. “He’s made us all proud.” Raphael described Cain as a “very likable and wellrespected kid.” “He was our altar boy at church, and he served funerals when I had services. Not many kids would do that,” he said. “He was a real gentleman.” Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Commander W.J. Turner of Lake Arthur said Cain was like a son to him. “He stood out, and he was proud of himself and his uniform,” Turner said. “He was a good soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country.” Monique Franklin had never met Cain or his family but felt compelled to show up and pay her respects. “There are just so many young people dying over there,” she said. “It’s sad when a young man’s life is ended so shortly. It could happen to any one of us.” Visitation continues from 1-7 p.m. today, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m.-9:15 a.m. Tuesday at Raphael Funeral Home on La. 26 south in Jennings. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Monday in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, followed by a remembrance service 6:30-8 p.m. The casket will be carried by a horse-drawn wagon from the funeral home to the church for a 10 a.m. funeral Mass on Tuesday. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A special procession will leave the funeral home at 1 p.m. Monday and pass by the Jennings schools and Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home before arriving at the church at 2:45 p.m CAIN, Marcus FALLEN SOLDIER HONORED IN JENNINGS City’s respects Marcus Cain killed Sept. 14 in Baghdad BY DORIS MARICLE AMERICAN PRESS 09/26/2006 JENNINGS — Family, friends, neighbors and strangers stood in silence Monday as the body of Army Cpl. Marcus “Duggie” Cain was escorted through the city, an honor for the local soldier who gave his life in Iraq. Police units and military vehicles were among those leading the long procession from Raphael Funeral Home to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for a remembrance service. It took more than an hour for the procession to make its way to the church. “This is a sad day for our community, but it is important for us to support his family as we all grieve for our hero,” said Billie Crochet, as she positioned herself along the procession route with her two young children. Cain, 20, was killed by a car bomb Sept. 14 in western Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division’s 4th Support Battalion, 1st Brigade, at Fort Hood, Texas. Parts of the city were awash in red, white and blue as dozens of U.S. flags were waved by schoolchildren, veterans and others who lined the streets. Many of those saluted or wiped tears as the procession slowly passed. Flags throughout the city flew at half-staff. Dianna Parsley didn’t know Cain, but said his death has brought the Iraqi war home. “Being a small town, we are basically very close, and it really means a lot to us because he went to Jennings High School, and he was a big part of Jennings High School,” Parsley said. “Some may not remember him as a student, but he was a neighbor down the street, and it is important for us to remember him.” At Jennings High, where Cain played football before graduating in 2004 and joining the Army, about 650 students gathered silently and watched as the members of the Louisiana National Guard’s C Company, 3rd Battalion, lowered the flag as the procession passed. “It is an honor to honor Marcus for the sacrifices he made,” 16-year-old Ashley Tizeno said. “He gave his life to protect me so I have my freedom today.” Assistant principal Edwin Ray said many of the students, especially the juniors and seniors, knew Cain. The students placed a memorial wreath with Cain’s picture in the lobby. Across town, nearly 600 students at Jennings Elementary lined the procession route dressed in red, white and blue and holding U.S. flags. Fifth-grade teacher Jeremy Doucet said the students were too young to fully understand, but wanted to show their support. “We have explained to them how Marcus chose to fight for our country and the freedom we have,” Doucet said. “He fought for that freedom, and unfortunately he lost his life.” Students at Ward Elementary School, Jeff Davis Parish Head Start and Our Lady of Immaculate School also watched the procession, as did residents at the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home. Visitation for Cain is 7-9:15 a.m. today in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with burial in the church cemetery.
