He died Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home. Burial will be in Andrus Cove Cemetery with full military rites under the direction of Matthews and Son Funeral Home, (337) 774-5177. The Rev. Bert Borel will officiate. Mr. Istre was a native of Welsh and a resident of Lake Arthur. He served in the Army in World War II. He was a retired tugboat captain of 34 years. He loved gardening, fishing and playing cards. Survivors include his wife, Ruby B. Istre of Lake Arthur; one son, Rudy Istre and his wife, Cynthia, of Lake Arthur; four daughters, Janice I. Breaux, Roseanna Istre, JoLynn Turner and Claudette I. Gauthier, all of Lake Arthur; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alcide and Lorena Guidry Istre; three brothers, Wilbert, R.J. and Henry Istre; one sister, Mary Lyons; one granddaughter, Johnnie B. Hebert; and one great-grandson, Adam Reed Istre. Visitation is 2:30-10 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m. recited by the Rev. Bert Borel, and from 8 a.m. Monday in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Judd Breaux, Jeff Yates, Craig Istre, Brad Yates, Blaine Hebert and Shannon “Shano” Guillory. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
