JONES, Larry, 45, Fondel Memorial Chapel Couple killed in fire LCAP 03/08/2006 Candle may have started flames BY DORIS MARICLE AMERICAN PRESS JENNINGS — Investigators are still looking for the cause of a house fire that claimed the lives of a local couple Tuesday. Larry Jones, 45, and Janice Marie Holland, 50, died after a house at 1211 Penny St. — thought to be vacant and without electricity — caught fire. Jones and Holland are the 10th and 11th house-fire victims in Jeff Davis Parish since February 2005. They apparently died of smoke inhalation, said interim Police Chief Johnny Lassiter. A candle or some other item in a front room near where the victims were found may have started the fire since the house had no electricity, Fire Chief Tommy Deshotel said. The victims were found near a boarded-up window in the rear of the home, where they may have been sleeping, Deshotel said. “It appears they were trying to get out,” he said. A passer-by called 911 at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday to report the blaze. The home, which is owned by Fannie Barnes of Jennings, had been boarded up and vacant for some time, officials said.
