Burial will be in Gueydan Cemetery with full military rites. The Rev. Edward Brunnert, M.S., and Monsignor James Gaddy will perform the services. Mr. Potier was a lifelong resident of Gueydan until 6 1 /2 years ago, when he moved to Jennings following the death of his beloved wife of 52 years, Vinis Marie Bertrand Potier, also of Gueydan. Following his graduation from Gueydan High School, he attended business college in Chillicothe, Mo., where he received an associate’s degree in accounting and business management, earning him a position with the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington, D.C. With the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Potier was drafted into the Army-Air Force, where he served as an aerial engineer and crew chief on a C-46, flying combat cargo over “The Hump” (the Himalayan Mountains) to our troops fighting in the China-Burma-India theatre. As a proud member of the Hump Pilots Association, a lifetime member of American Legion Post 520 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Jennings, he took great delight in sharing his “war stories” with close friends, family and anyone else he crossed paths with. His distinguished military service career played a primary role in his life, and we, his family, will not soon forget the glowing pride he took in serving this country he loved so much. As a devoted resident of Vermilion Parish, Mr. Potier followed in the historic footsteps of his great-grandfather, Nathan Perry, the first elected sheriff of Vermilion Parish, by dedicating himself as a public servant to his community. Mr. Potier served as both mayor and city councilman for the town of Gueydan and served on the inaugural board of the Gueydan Memorial Guest Home, where he was recognized as being that individual most instrumental in procuring the Certificate of Need required to bring the guest home to fruition. He retired after dedicating himself to 30 years of service as operations manager for the Gueydan branch of Louisiana Rice Mill Inc. and Riviana Foods Inc., and concurrently, he and his wife owned and operated a portrait studio in Gueydan for some 20-plus years. In the years proceeding and subsequent to his retirement, the couple enjoyed pleasurable days of fishing at their camp on Toledo Bend Reservoir, where more times than not, she managed to out-fish “The Great-White Fisherman.” They were members of the Square Shooters of Jennings and the Dixie Twirlers Square Dance Club of Abbeville. In 1999, Mr. Potier moved to Jennings, where he was a faithful member of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church and a third-degree knight in Knights of Columbus Council 2012. He enjoyed membership and participation in Gueydan’s Krewe de la Chambre Royale annual ball and in Le Krewe du le Originales et Les Enfants, living life to the fullest and enjoying all that his Cajun culture had to offer.
