IN THORNWELL House fire claims two lives Girl, guardian die; 3 others survive BY DORIS MARICLE LAKE CHARLESAMERICAN PRESS 01/08/2006 THORNWELL — A 6-year-old girl and one of her guardians perished in an early-morning fire Saturday, their bodies found together near an exit of their home here. The victims are Louis Richard Jr., 45, and Angela Dawn Ortego. Ortego lived with Louis and Tammy Richard, who were her guardians. Tammy Richard, her 9-year old daughter, Bethany Richard, and 11-year-old Paula Fontenot, a friend who was sleeping over, escaped the fire at 6478 La. 382 South. They refused medical treatment at the scene, according to Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Ricky Edwards. “Louis Richard was found two feet from the back door, still carrying Angela,” Edwards said. Family members said they awoke to find the house on fire and tried to escape. “She (Tammy) had put the girl (Angela) down to break a window so they could get outside. When they all got outside, they realized she was missing,” said relative Chad Mears of Opelousas. “He (Louis) went back in to get her. They almost made it. He still had her in his arms.” Later Saturday, with the smell of smoke still heavy in the air and smoke rising from the smoldering wood- frame home, distraught family members wept and hugged one another as they tried to make sense of what had happened just hours before. “I couldn’t see nothing but smoke when I got here,” said Lester Bouley, a cousin from Jennings. “I just couldn’t believe it. I just saw him about a week ago.” The fire destroyed the home, a nearby shed and two vehicles. A passerby saw the fire at about 3:30 a.m. and called 911. The home was engulfed when Jeff Davis Parish Fire District 4 firefighters and sheriff’s deputies arrived. The cause of the deaths has not been determined. Coroner Richard Dupont sent the bodies to Calcasieu for autopsies. The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
