First black DA
CLINTON -- Arrangements are pending for Charles Shropshire, the
first elected black district attorney in Louisiana. He died
Sunday at age 57.
Shropshire was elected DA of the 20th Judicial District (East 
and West Feliciana parishes) in 1996 and served through 2002. He 
had been an assistant DA for 12 years.
He held degrees from LSU and Southern University Law Center.

Former UL athlete
LAFAYETTE -- Services will be Thursday for Marvin Leonard, a
member of the UL Athletic Hall of Fame. He died March 5 at age 
74.
Leonard, a former special agent n the US Army Counter-
Intelligence Corps, won four letters in football and baseball at 
UL. He was retired from Lafayette Parish Consolidated 
Government, where he worked in transportation and employee 
relations.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn, two sons and two daughters.

Former Calcasieu juror
LAKE CHARLES -- Services for Julian Dondis, a former Calcasieu 
Parish police juror, will be Friday. He died March 3 at age 79.
Dondis, owner of Greengate Garden Center, was a former director 
of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry and a 
holder of te Louisiana Association of Nurserymen’s James A. 
Foret Award. He was a founding member of the Krewe of Contraband 
and on the board of the Louisiana Organization for Judicial 
Excellence.
Survivors include his wife Sallie, three sons and two daughters.
Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home.

Former principal
NEW ROADS -- Services for retired Rosenwald High principal 
Edward C. Nelson will be Thursday. He died March 6 at age 85.
Nelson was Rosenwald principal for 19 years. After retiring from 
the Pointe Coupee system, he was associate director of the 
Louisiana Teaching Professional Practice Commission.
He served as director of Point Coupee Head Start for three years 
and was chairman of Point Coupee Sewer District No. 1.
Survivors include a son and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Verette Pointe Coupee.

Former waterway counsel
BATON ROUGE -- A graveside service was Monday for James Bagley, 
former counsel for the Red River Waterway Commission. He died 
Feb. 18 at age 69.
Bagley was retired from the Louisiana Commission on Law 
Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice.
