Mr. Dupleix was born in France on September 29, 1820, and is a son of Yoes and Marguerite (Lawalle) Dupleix, natives also of France, where they died at a good old age. Louis Dupleix is the third of six children, three now living, born to the union of the above worthy couple. He was educated in his native country at Dupleix Institution in Bordeaux which school was founded by his father. He came to the United States in 1841 and for a year and a half resided in New Orleans, after which he removed to LaFayette parish, residing there about six years. In 1848 he came to Natchitoches and here he has since resided, esteemed and respected by all. While a resident of LaFayette parish he was engaged in various occupations, teaching, merchandising and planting and after coming to this city he still carried on merchandising and farming, carrying on the same for a year. After this for three or four years he was engaged in the newspaper business and owned the Natchitoches Union and the Natchitoches Times. Later he again returned to agricultural pursuits, continued this one year, and then embarked in the commission business in New Orleans. After this he followed farming until 1872, when he was appointed register of the United States Land Office at Natchitoches by Gen. U. S. Grant. This position he held under the administration of Grant Hayes, Garfield and Arthur, and on May 19, 1890, he was appointed to the same position by President Harrison. Mr. Dupleix was married in 1843 to Miss Clemence Dugas, a native of LaFayette Parish, La. Her death occurred in 1886. In politics Mr. Dupleix was formerly a Whip, but is now a Republican. He is well educated, and is an upright honorable gentleman.
